I like the series and now that it is ending, I am thinking of picking up the books. Are they worth it?

they're the best book series ever

If you liked GOT seasons 1-4, you'll go gaga over the books

Yes. The third book is one of the most exciting things you will ever read....albeit maybe not after watching the show.

Wow. Really? I've read some pretty good books. I would be surprised if this was the best ever. Maybe I will try them.

Yes and no.

There are amazing interesting parts

And then you have to read 100 pages about Sansa sitting in a room.

And some people love that, but parts are just boring.

The biggest issue with the books is that is all POV of a different character. And as the kill of POV characters they replace them with people you meet like 4 books in and don’t give a shite about.

Storm of Swords one of the greatest books ever written IMO.

I've only read the first 2. The first book is about the same as season 1 of the show.

I read them before this season. They are interesting. After you have seen the show the impact of the big moments is lost, so I may not have enjoyed them as much as someone who went in without the spoilers.

They’re excellent.

The writing itself, it’s not always consistent. But the characters are superb, and Martin is ruthless. His characters always do what’s in their nature.

Jaimes arc in the books is probably my favorite.

Dani, I never liked he plot line, either in the books, or the show. The action in Westeros is more interesting.

I read them each soon after they were written. A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings are great books. A Storm of Swords is the gem of the series. A Feast for Crows is a snooze fest as is the first 2/3 of A Dance of Dragons (in which there is a common timeline that throws off the pacing). The last 1/3 of A Dance of Dragons has everyone on the same timeline and picks up steam well and is a good read.

I personally like the POV style that he uses for each chapter. I remember reading the Red Wedding chapter (it is written in Catelyn's point of view). I threw the book across the room and didn't pick it back up to read for several months. Not knowing it was coming, it was a worse gut punch than on GoT, though I know that is hard to believe.

same, I always preferred the Westeros stuff.

My favorite stuff was actually at the Wall and beyond.

Same, I had no idea and I launched the book across the room.

Blew my mind.

Storm of Swords is incredible, especially with Arya in Harranhal talking to Roose Bolton.

It was considered the best fantasy series out there before the show. Of course it has haters now. Read them. You'll be shocked you read 4000+ pages once you're done. Probably a good time to start with the sixth book *surely* being no more than a year away.

There is enough of Winds done that if Martin was to drop dead today it would still release. Assuming GRRM wraps it up right and stops droping Targaryen's out of the sky, Winds should allow the reader to piece the ending together using the television show.

I prefer A Dance With Dragons much more than I did A Feast for Crows. The Cersei chapters in AFFC were just too much. Mainly the chapters with her in prison, were insufferable. I mean I still liked the book a lot, but that made it by far the worst of the five for me.

awesome.

I wish I would have been able to read that 1st instead of seeing it. I started reading at the end of season three.

Ditto. I watched the first episode and then read all 5 books before I watched another episode.

SOS was gut wrenchingly good.

My wife finally decided to watch it with me before season 7 started and we binged it all in about 3 weeks. I took a cruel pleasure in her watching Rains of Castmere for the first time.

She’s pissed at me currently for introducing her to it now as Dany was her favorite character.

Well it’s bittersweet. If you read them you will love them but then you’ll want to kick RR Martin in the ball sack for not finishing. So, if you like waiting for Mr, never walked past a ham sandwich, then go ahead.
