Haven't seen the latest Dune movie, and the 2nd part is supposed to come out this fall(?). Never read those books either. I've heard they're a bit of a tough read. Even for 'nerds'. I read The Silmarillion, and as much as I am a huge Tolkien fan, it took me a few times to begin to grasp it. It's not for everyone.

I can see fans of the books getting annoyed that so much money and effort has gone into making a visually stunning series but they failed to stick to the source material. That is frustrating.

They captured the atmosphere of Dune pretty well. I've only read the first book and started the 2nd one but have heard the whole series kinda goes off the rails. The movies only cover book 1 anyway.

Beautifully shot movie but it does end on a cliffhanger

Ugh. Early parts of S2 were at least decent, but the last two episodes are meandering messes, which nearly having me pulling the ejection handles. If S3 gets back on track, great, but the last few episodes of S2 had me paying attention to Spain vs. The Netherlands. That's not a good sign.

IDK how far this is straying from the books, but the more the writers et al try to 'wing it' with the story the more likely it is spin out of control into a jumbled mess.

When given a blueprint, it's easier to branch off and toss in some random side stories, but as it tends to be the case, when they start to invent things wholesale in a desperate attempt to fill content is when shows get into trouble.

I agree. These last two episodes… yeeesh.

I do not care about the fat monk chick and her friends.

The fleet admiral character is interesting and so is the betrothed courtier queen, but the story is waaay too convoluted. Simplify.

Here’s the thing. Stories are best when their main ideas are communicated in the simplest of terms. This show is addicted to diverse ideas communicated in the most complex of terms.

I already like a lot of characters here. You’re halfway there. Land the story.

And yes, I know the source material is not easy… but I’m just talking about the show. I never read the books.

Yeah, I'm digging the Queen. The Rose Tico chick needs to change up her look. The Gaal - Hari personal drama is a bit much. Yeah, things didn't go the way anyone wanted, but if you're trying to save THE GALAXY I think you can move past it. At least compartmentalize things. Good grief.

It can still be said, focus on empire, the emperors and the conflict with foundation. Get rid of the Salvor/Gaal storyline and they have a really good show.

They missed a golden opportunity in not going with the Elijay Baley (mystery) novels first - and then world building on and on and on - into Empire and Foundation.

It could have been grand storytelling that would last a generation, especially if you find a talented actor (early 20s) to play Daneel Olivaw through the whole thing.

Never read the books. I think the show is awesome tho. Lee Pace is great

I just started this and am 3 episodes in. Without spoilers, do we ever get any details on just how the dude was using math to predict the future and what the fall is?

I'm 2/3 of the way through season 2. There's been a lot of hand-waving on the psychohistory background so far. They've teased a little bit more about the fall, but it's still unclear.

I'm really not sure about this show. I love the universe it's set in, and maybe that's why I keep watching it, but the writing is not great sometimes, and half the actors are terrible.

I like the Trantor/Empire storyline. The whole clone idea is intriguing. I'm unsure how they've kept Demerzel's robotic form a secret for so long. Seems kind of obvious, but what do I know. Without spoilers, I'm at a point in the story where Demerzel's role is becoming clearer.

Gaal/Salvor is annoying. I actually don't mind Salvor all that much as a standalone character, but her and Gaal's plot at the point I'm at in the series (mind-reader planet) is uninteresting. I also don't get why Gaal hates Harry so much. Harry got her off her home planet and certain death as a heretic, and put her on a course to help save humanity, but nah, she'd rather be a bitch about it.

That was actually brought up in the podcast. Seems it's a common question. As robots are widely assumed to have been eradicated for centuries, if not longer, no one would suspect her to be one. And since cloning is a thing, there's the idea floating around that as she served the first Cleon, so do her clones serve Empire. And since they probably keep her existence and actual job title vague for the general public, they can get away with her hiding in plain sight, as it were.

Show gets better as it goes along. The most recent season was really good.

Yes and yes

Great show imo. Didnt read the books.

Yeah, gaal sucks but Hari and Day really carry the show.

Certainly some slower boring episodes sprinkled throughout and some of the side stuff is meh, but overall, I’m a fan.
