Great series! Goodsir's death was well done with the flashes of simplistic beauty (a flower, a mineral, etc...) soothing him as he died.

What's the story on the guy Crozier found clinging to life at the end? He said "close" and his face had piercings and chain. Was he a lost cast member from the Pirates of the Caribbean?

That was Lt. Little who was leading the remainder of the expedition to safety (or so they thought). I think he was delirious and thought he was close to finding the shore/safety when he told Crozier he was "close".

The chains and piercings were odd-why would they have all that extra shite with them when they were going overland to the shore/safety?

I was trying to figure out the time frame from when Crozier was rescued by Silence until they went out searching for the remainder of his crew. Does the book give any idea of how long he was in recovery with the Inuits?

The ice can move and reopen depending on temperature and the wind. There were a couple of search parties in real life that went up in the immediate decade following the loss of the expedition, some were over land from the south, one was by sea. They did interview Inuits about the lost crew and what happened to them, the Inuit's described cannibalism by some and that the last they saw was a small group of 4 I believe, hopeless walking east trying to walk back to coast/Britain. And there have been several research studies down on the archaeological evidence that has been found.

Here is a really good documentary on the lost expedition that I found. They go into the effects of the lead and other health factors and how terrible things were for the crew LINK

One question is why didn’t Crozier die of lead poisoning like the other crew members?

In the book scurvy was killing the sailors. Their canned food was contaminated, but they knew it and didn't eat it. The Admiralty took a low bid that did the canning and they had to throw out most of the food. If the canned food be not spoiled they could have stayed another year on the ice. I think they had enough canned food for 3 years with full rations.

When I read about events like this in history, I tend to gloss over them. Some ships got stuck in the ice and the crew all vanished.

This series really helped humanize the event. Stuck for years on end on a frozen hellscape. Can't eat the food. Having absolutely no idea how you were going to get out of it. The tedium of living each day with the thought of "what will my end be?". Just truly disheartening to think about what those guys went through.

You really should read the book - there is so much more to their suffering than they can convey on TV.

For example, Fitzhugh found his way to Silence's igloo - he compared her fur to their wools - describing how on their journeys, their wool clothes would become drenched in sweat, increasing the weight of their clothing by several pounds. The descriptions of pulling those skids over thr rocks and he ice holds was fascinating and horrifying.

The detail in the book is amazing.

He didn't fit in any where in England. Him being Irish held him back. With the Inuits he found a family and a people that accepted him, despite his differences

Crozier being Irish and the 2nd class status that accompanied his being Irish was emphasized more in the book than the series. Also, his love for Sir James' niece was not featured as prominently in the book. He pretty much went on the expediton to gain a knightship so he would be good enough for her. Conversely, Fitzhugh went on the voyage to get out of an engagement.

I haven't finished the book, so I can't wait to see how the book ends.

Just started watching this on Hulu. Finished episode 4 and it's pretty damn good so far.

Actually it's better than having "some good moments".

Like most folks are saying, it's a slow burn but worth it. Excellent character development.

"Punished as a boy" was a pretty compelling episode.

I'm trying to get into it but just can't so far. Only 3 episodes in though. Probably doesn't help that I wait to watch it at almost midnight and am usually already tired. Fell asleep during episode 2.
