IMO, this is what makes MoviePass so valuable. Without it, there's no way in he'll much wife nor myself would've paid to see this film. The cost of admission is no longer a barrier to entry, so it doesn't hurt to give it a shot.

Had it been worthwhile, I'd have been the first one to come back and say that my instincts were wrong, but having experienced this runaway clown car full of incontinent circus midgets of a movie, my first impression. For the trailer was spot on.

This film is is a mess.

Yeah, I have the same feeling. I've been disappointed by heavily-hyped horror flicks in the past.

I hated The Witch, It Comes At Night, It Follows, and thought A Quiet Place was just ok

But I thought Hereditary was the best horror I’ve seen in years. See it and decide for yourself

As posted in the spoiler thread, I went against my better judgment and saw it tonight. Suspicions confirmed. I feel dumber for having endured this film.

Thank God for MoviePass.

It's interesting to me that you consider yourself a fan of horror films, yet go into this one with a completely closed mind. You had decided you didn't like it before seeing, went to see it anyway for some reason, and come on here to tout your intuition.

You sound like a miserable movie-goer. I always thought that horror fans (myself included) had to go in to these things with a higher tolerance (or even expectation) for middling to poor quality. I guess I just found the New Yorker's horror movie reviewer.

You went into it with a bias against the film. You stuck to that bias. Your opinion on this film, while your own, is worthless.

It’s because he isn’t. I belong to quite a few horror chat groups and fans are loving this movie.

The ones who aren’t are the young kids who expected jump scares and fun, or those who think horror ends at Freddy and Jason.

I love all those movies and consider Hereditary to be this generation’s The Exorcist

Script holds it back.

The Ring is still the best horror movie this century

In the end, everyone's opinion is worthless. Entertainment is subjective and water is wet.

I'm glad you did me the solid and told me hat I was thinking as I watched the film, though. I appreciate it. Without your astute, psychic analysis of my motivations and what I am and am not truly a fan of, I just don't know how is get along.

You must be the horror genre's OMLandshark - the self-appointed arbiter of what is and isn't acceptable for opinions on Star Wars films.

You’re not a horror fan. It’s obvious. But nice sentence structure and some top notch word usage in an attempt to not post like a mouth breather. Glad you took a break.

Great. Now this will be 15 pages of people fighting over Star Wars.

Aha. Sorry I don't meet your test. Just because I havent bent over backwards to fawn over movies that suffer from Clever Director Syndrome doesn't cut it, huh?

OK, I just got out. First off, let me just say that Toni Collette has the Oscar for Best Actress wrapped up. She was incredible.

Now I’m a pretty smart guy, but I find myself asking, “WTF did I just watch?” The first half of the film was painfully slow, but that didn’t bother me; I was intrigued by where it was going. I was wondering where all of these subtle hints were going to lead, where was it all going to come together and be explained. But in the end, the payoff was fricking weak. It left a lot of confusion and a lot of unanswered questions. Like another poster said, it was just a mess and way too much going on — it was too busy. Too many puzzle pieces that didn’t fit together. I’m gonna go home and look up some of the stuff I didn’t understand but I’d have to say that it was (other than Collette’s performance) a huge disappointment. I guess some people will think it’s clever or “artistic” but not me. Not me.

What were you confused about? I followed the entire movie just fine and wasn’t at all confused or perplexed by what was happening.

Other than the praise for Toni Collette, I don’t agree with any of your review. But you at least have some good thoughts on to why you feel that way, and not like some who had a bias built up and then went and saw it, for whatever reason.

Edit: this link will help explain some things LINK

I like to gamble, so when a movie is really divisive, it makes me want to see it more. I’d rather go to a movie I know there’s a chance I’ll love, and a chance I’ll hate, than go to a movie I know will be pretty good.

Pretty much this.
Kind of reminds me of Paranormal Activity and it’s sequels It turned into some horseshite family cult following. Started off good but fell apart at the end.

And it wasn’t that scary.

Honestly bro I have more questions than I have answers. Maybe if some of the questions were explained I might have a slightly better view.

1- What was the purpose of the writing on the walls? "SATONY" "PANDEMONIUM" etc.
2- Why did she cut the head off the bird? What was up with building all of those figures?
3- How did Charlie get possessed by Paimon? Where the frick did the spirit come from, anyway? Who was in he in, prior to Charlie?
4- How did the grandmother become "queen" and how did she get involved in this cult to begin with?
5- How did the grandmother's body get in the attic?
6- What was up w/ the clucking? Just to show that Paimon was in that person?
7- Why did Annie go after her son at the end and eventually kill herself, if she wasn't part of the cult? Was she somehow being controlled by Paimon?
8- What was the purpose of the sleepwalking? Just to throw people off? What about the paint thinner episode?
9- Why was the secret symbol on the telephone pole that Charlie's head hit?
10- Why did the dude break his own nose? What possessed him to do that?
11- Why did the coven decide to keep Charlie in the role, even after the spirit was in her brother's body?

I'm sure I can think of plenty more, if you give me time. If you were able to interpret all of that stuff, props to you.
