Anybody else miss the old history channel?

Ya know before it went to nothing but pawn stars and pickers 24 fricking 7. Now don't get me wrong the mini series like Hatfield and McCoy, the bible and shows like Vikings is nice, but I miss actual documentaries and shows on the ancient world. Why can't they at least air some of this late at night instead of 12 hours of mike and his butt buddy frank.

Here here. The history channel used to be awesome and I'd have it on whenever I was in the living room. Now I just watch Vikings on-demand and never turn the channel on. The programming is terrible.

You should check out the American Heroes Channel (AHC). It's like the old history channel. On Directv it's channel 287.

I haven't looked it up in a while, but they also have H2 and I believe some of the stuff you're talking about moved over to that one.

No new Modern Marvels - yes that was a great show. They do have lots of good new WWII programming

Last I checked, H2 became the Vice Channel or some shite.
History Channel was better when it was the Hitler Channel instead of the Haggle Channel.

Pawn Stars is my favorite “reality” (it’s scripted) of all time. They should just have their own channel. I’ve been a fan of this show even before it became a meme and I love that it became a meme because now there’s more people to make jokes about it with

Yeah, it was definitely a lot better when it was all Hitler - all the time.
I think I sort of know more about Hitler than my own family.
Hitlers henchmen, Hitler's war, Hitler's bunker, Hitler's SS, Hitler's secret tunnels, Hitler's mistress, Hitler's favorite food, Secrets of Hitler's german shepard, Hitler's Vegan fascism - how Hitler demanded Vegetables, Hitler's favorite movie, etc.

That was nice when they were infrequently shown in between the Hitler programming and WWII.
For 15 years History Channel was called The Hitler Channel...
Occasional Civil War stuff, Ancient Wars, etc.
It's never been anything all that great. Very one-dimensional like they are now.
So much promise but didn't want to pay for shite. The channel was something you found scrolling and if there was something that sounded decent you stayed...but it wasn't anything special with documentaries. Most of them were sophmoric docs...with shady juvenile history at best.
It wasn't like American Experience docs on PBS.

AHC has turned into nothing but hitler and nazis and wwii.
dont get me wrong, i love the subject. but i mean frick, there is a lot more to history beyond that one war.

As I answer every time this thread comes up:
At one point about 15 years ago, The History Channel was the third most watched cable channel among adult males (after the two ESPNs). So there IS an audience for history on TV.
Unfortunately, it's not the most demographically desirable audience. It's older, and male. Sponsors prefer younger viewers who are seen as more willing to change brands. Sponsors also like women (they make most of the household buying decisions) and women like "reality", i.e. voyeuristic gossip.

I actually bought a DVD set on Ancient Rome produced by the history channel. High quality watch. Too bad they don't really do much history anymore.

European channels such as the BBC have produced a shitload of WWII docs. A US channel can obtain the rights to one, slap on an American narrator, and presto they have a program for very little cost.

I've mentioned this before whenever this thread comes up, but I spend some time on history message boards, and a lot of aging baby boomer males are only interested in WWII. I've had guys get pissed at me for suggesting it's OK to be interested in other history subjects and not know everything there is to know about WWII.
I'm sure the aging baby boomer dude whose daddy killed the Nazzees make up a big part of the audience these networks are targeting.
Still, I like Hitler Channel better than "This blade weel keel."
