I just rewatched it on Netflix..
Love this film..the realism of it and the "All Star Cast"

Only negative, if you can call it that, is that at times it seemed to whimsical or happy.

Do you think it can be pulled off today? All Star Cast , some playing small parts, minimal CGI or none and what event would you make the setting? (Any War etc)

I always felt the main score theme was far too "happy" sounding for the film, especially after the ending and the final freeze frame. It's the only fault I have with what is it otherwise my favorite war movie of all time.

I just watched this a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I thought it could've been shortened by around 20-30 minutes, but otherwise I thought it was a great account of Market Garden and the cast was stellar.

I totally agree with you about the soundtrack, Jack Ruby.

The grandfather of one of my son’s friends was portrayed in the movie - he was the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne and was in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. I think he was a consultant for the movie or parts were taken from his autobiography. Loved the movie - I watched it after reading his book. He recently died at age 103.

my favorite Sean Connery scene, where he tells Browning (Dirk Bogarde) that he's prone to airsickness...

On a Rhine cruise last year, we visited Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Our elderly city guide said he was a kid during Operation Market Garden. He told us how his father woke him early one morning telling him there was something he needed to see. He ran to the window where he saw what he thought was confetti falling from the sky. Running outside he learned the confetti was actually multicolored parachutes dropping with troops and supplies. Nijmegen was being liberated!

He told how he ran up to one of the US soldiers and was handed a slice of “chewing gum,” the first English words he learned. Not knowing what it was he chewed and swallowed it. Said it was the greatest thing he ever tasted. He was extremely appreciative of Americans and their sacrifices for his freedom.

One of the great movies that goes along with a great book. It’s rare when both are really great.

It's a great film - in the same league as The Longest Day and Patton.

Nijmegen bridge September 24, 2019

A buddy from the Marines and I took a trip to France and the Netherlands last year to visit the Normandy and Market-Garden battlefields. We stayed in Nijmegen for that part of the trip*.

*Side note: If you're young, male and single with a weakness for tall blondes, I suggest a trip to Holland. Just one 5'11"-6'2" blonde babe after another.

I think I see Robert Redford rowing across the river in that photograph.

I actually like it because I think it perfectly captures the sense of assured triumph and overconfidence that surrounded the plan prior to its implementation.

I think if you asked the participants to make a song that they would play as they enter Berlin on Christmas, that would be it.

Same author wrote both books, Cornelius Ryan.

One of the historical figures I’ve always wanted to punch in the throat was Monty.

I'm pretty sure Patton, Eisenhower, and even Bradley would have told you to get in line. Antony Beevor really soils Monty's reputation in his tome on the Second World War.
