Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to hire actors and musicians to talk about history throughout the show? I'd rather listen to some qualified historian than fricking Puff Daddy talk about what he knows nothing about.

I agree that it's kind of useless but the celebrities who talk never speak like their experts. Most of their dialogue is just generalities and cliches about the "American spirit".

Western expansion amazes me. I can't believe how fast Americans migrated out West. These people are living on land that had never been inhabited, except for maybe an Indian tribe. How would they know what type of climate to expect, what type of wildlife was out there, etc? I'm in awe of those who in 1860 knew that they could dynamite through mountains to build rail roads.

How could anyone survive the dust bowl? The locusts were of biblical proportions. It said that 50% of those that located in Nebraska, left before staying 20 years.

I have watched all of these and look forward to each new episode on Sunday nights.

this. I'm always in awe when I think back on how this country was truly founded. It just reminds me of the human spirit, we really don't know what we are capable of until we are forced to find out.

Typically what happens is that those in power take those not in power and force them to do the work, while the rich get richer.

It is funny when you watch a show like that (I haven't watched every minute but have seen most of both nights) that they never really talk about how badly the Chinese workers who built the railroad were treated. They were treated as badly, if not worse, than the slaves on the southern plantations. However, since it was for the good of the country no one seems to make a big deal out of it.

It surprised me to find out the Liv Schrieber was the narrator. I never would have guessed that.

yeah, they certainly avoid a lot of the negativity of our early struggles. They kept it real short with the whole "indian" era as well.

This is the fricking USA Today/McNews of documentaries. I give it a B- at best. Probably a C+ or so.

Agree, it's pretty good and entertaining but it does seem a little cheap at times.

Why does this put you in awe? They weren't stupid. They had been building railroad tunnels for decades.

Back on the orignal topic: This series is a serious FAIL.

Sheryl Crow?!?
Sean Combes?!?
Michael Douglas?!?

At least Donald Trump made a name for himself other than as an entertainer . . . errr . . . well anyway.

Someone said earlier that it was the USA Today of history and that seems about right. Add in the fact that they need to mentioned which people were gay and to equate the struggle of racial equlaity to the gay rights struggle and use the Declaration of Independence as justification is pretty out there.

I've enjoyed it so far, but agree with the others about the problems with the show. Still fun to watch and think about what it truly took to build (both good and bad) this country into a superpower in such a short time.

At least they're not pretending to know a whole lot. It's a bunch of "Americans are hard workers" and "we can do anything" babble. Thankfully, Diddy didn't try to explain the Underground Railroad.

A huge pot of FAIL with nothing but liberal entertainers talking about their view of history.
As if what they say is black and white. End of discussion.

Too much editorializing.

Making a hole in a mountain mostly by hand is impressive whether you know how to do it or not.
I also heard them say they didn't have any qualified engineers while building the erie canal.

I cannot take this documentary seriously when they have the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Margaret cho and Bruce Jenner providing hisorical context. NO CREDIBILITY

Thank you. I'm sure somewhere in the world man had used explosives to burrow through mountains. But we are still talking about the 1860s. There weren't even any telephones yet. We went and got Chinese labor to come and blow a hole through mountains. It said more than 1500 Chinese men died setting off the explosions.

I could see man reaching a point where we say, "Well, I just don't think it's humanly possible to make train tracks over/through these mountains."

Look at construction sites today and see how much machinery is used. Did you see what that the loggers had to do much of the work without heavy machinery. They just floated logs down stream. When they got stuck, men lost their lives trying to break up the log jam.

Yes, I am in awe.
