SIAP (I searched)

LINK

quote:

The Walking Dead alum Michael Rooker has been tapped to co-star opposite Sam Strike and Jasper Pääkkönen in Amazon’s pilot The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s book, which has started production

quote:

The Dark Tower TV series, from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and MRC, is independent from the 2017 film and is meant to be a more faithful retelling of the book than the movie was. I hear it takes place many years before the events depicted in the feature and will focus on the origin story of Roland Deschain’s (Strike) – how he first became a gunslinger and got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black (Pääkkönen), his first love and his first mission as a gunslinger.

quote:

Pääkkönen is believed to be playing Marten, the character Roland is out to kill. I hear Rooker also plays a main villain and might be Eldred Jonas from the books, a failed gunslinger.

Anyone who met Rooker a few years ago at Wizard World in New Orleans, quickly became fans if not already. I'm hoping this will go well, as the story needs a series to be properly told to begin with imo

So the series is just gonna be book 4 essentially?

Seems like a dumb way to do it unless they are just testing the waters before green lighting the rest of the story

I believe it's a Pilot but it doesn't make sense to start at The Wizard and the Glass either way.

Based on the guy they cast as Roland it would almost have to be wizard and glass. The dude is 25 and looks 20-21

This actually gives me hope for the LOTR series.

It seems amazon may be more focused on being true to the source of these great properties than trying to fill them with some team of writers "vision" of them.

Good grief, now they are going to start with the origin story, Wizard and Glass. Just follow the books. They act like everyone in the world has read them. Many have not. Just tell it like the books. Hollywood never fails to amaze with their arrogance thinking they can improve on stories that have sold millions and millions of copies.

At the end of the series, he can appear on screen and monologue about how the audience are a bunch of stupid assholes for expecting a solid ending.

The Wizard and the Glass is the best book in the series so I don’t hate the decision to start it there. It would be jarring to have an entire season or two flashback anyway.

I disagree. Starting with Wizard and Glass is fine. First, it's a good story. The Dark Tower has great stories and bad ones, so they picked a good one.

It avoids the major flaws of the feature film. It is a smaller story and doesn't try to ram 7 books into 90 minutes. It also keeps Roland as the protagonist instead of subbing Jake.

Finally, it's chronologically fine. Wizard and Glass is chronologically the first Dark Tower story. Unless you've read the books, you won't see it as odd at all.

It’s strange to me how Hollywood so often fails make a straightforward adaptation from book to film. The story is written. Just make reasonable casting decisions and film it.

I like Wizard and Glass ok, but that is not what drew me into the world of the Dark Tower. It was the Gunslinger. That book is not as complicated as some that follow it, it is shorter, and I feel would do better to draw people in from the beginning who are not familiar with the source material.

Who has read the whole series?
I stalled out in Book 4.
Wish I would pick it up again, but I just don't.

I don't really disagree because I really like The Gunslinger as well. The Gunslinger is also a short, contained story that would lend itself to a project like this, IMO.

I see it more as two good options. W&G gives you a lot of background and depth to Roland's character, and it's a solid story.

If they're doing it this way, having The Gunslinger as a second season would be optimal. In theory, they could even do Wind and the Keyhole as a followup if they're going pure chronological order, which I also think is a good story.

I liked The Gunslinger, but I think the risk is that it's the most divisive. I know people who love it and people who hate it. I think W&G tends to be a safer story.

I’ve read the whole thing. I find The Gunslinger and Wizard and Glass to be the best two stories. While it drops off in the final books I’m glad I read them all.

I’m curious how they’re gonna handle the scenes at the Oz castle in the beginning and end

Yea I’m really interested to see how the play this out. Luckily amazon has the money to do the CG right for a lot of these scenes
