Ripley’s maternal instinct kicked in. Good characters are ones based in truth. Take what makes the sexes different and interesting and connect it to a good story. You don’t make a woman a hero by making her a man but by pushing in on her femininity. It’s not that hard.
Same thing with Sarah Conner in T2. Female action hero’s going full on Mama Bear is always a good plot choice.

If I survived 'Alien' I wouldn't go back in space ever again. I would not care if everyone thought I was lying.
Paul Rudd's character is a top ten movie douche, he acted well. I always disliked him because of that role.
I agree she was the ultimate heroine. She was not a Mary Sue and was very believable.

Reiser
He said his mother was pissed at him after she saw the movie.

Reiser, right Mad about You.

Paul Rudd should do a role like that. Some of these actors nowadays are playing the same character over and over again.

I think I would have just assumed she was already dead.

But she knew she wasn't dead. The tracker showed her moving into the nest so she knew that she was in there being cocooned.

Re watched this yesterday because of this thread.
4 things
1. No
2. Movie is still incredibly badass
3. How did Lt. Gorman get to where he was? What an incapable pos.
4. Keeley from Ted Lasso could be a grown up Newt, they look related

Hicks and Kyle Reese are two of the cooler good guys in cinema history. Was surprised he didn’t get more roles in the early 90s. He was in Tombstone and The Rock at least.

The only way I could be convinced to even try going back is somehow knowing she's not been subjected to being victim to a face hugger. Once that's done, there's no point. Nuke the place.

College boy that went to officer school.

Alcoholism.
Cameron tried to break him off a piece a lot.
Fun note, he got his start in the movie Grease

The IMD “did you know” of this film is one of my favorites
Cameron, a notorious hard a-hole on set said to the British crew of Pinewood studios at the end
"This has been a long and difficult shoot, fraught by many problems," he said. "But the one thing that kept me going, through it all, was the certain knowledge that one day I would drive out the gate of Pinewood and never come back, and that you sorry bastards would still be here."
The shoot was apparently a constant battle between Cameron and the British crew, they hated each other.

The Netflix show about movies goes into this in great detail, up to their annoying tea breaks

In this scenario, it makes sense. Gorman may or may not have negotiating skills, but definitely not a seasoned guy, so his team gets sent to deal with (what was likely presented as) a nothing-burger. Most likely a faulty communications transmitter or the like, and he has enough firepower in the off-chance that somebody's gone rogue.
Once it was determined the threat was real, he was in over his head. He sent his team into a situation with no viable weapons because of the risk they'd blow the facility up.

No he didn't. They didn't realize that until they were already deep into the hive. Gorman's major mistake in my view was not being with his men on patrol.

In the first two movies, it’s established that Weyland-Yutani doesn’t give a frick, they want that Alien. In the 2nd, Aliens, they most definitely knew what they were up against. The corporation knew what had taken out the colony without a doubt.
I think they purposely sent in a squad led by an inexperienced dude so their plan could come to fruition. For the Marines to get killed enough and Burke could bring back an embryo. Weyland-Yutani were some cold motherfrickers

He was a young, inexperienced lieutenant, probably straight out the academy or whatnot. Because of that, he froze when shite hit the fan.
But even Gorman had a character arc. Yet another reason this movie is such a masterpiece. After the hive debacle, he had enough self-awareness to realize that he was in over his head and quietly allowed the more savvy and experienced Hicks take de facto command.
But, like any good officer, he cared about his soldiers. And his character arc comes to fruition when he goes back to help Vasquez, knowing that it was pretty much a suicide mission.
