I had no idea that Hugh Laurie was until I saw him in Blackadder the Third
I had seen him in Sense and Sensibility with a primarily British cast so I wasn't particularly surprised. Same goes with Andrew Lincoln (Rick from The Walking Dead) in Love Actually and Henry Cavill (The Tudors).
I was on the other hand surprised that Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty, The Wire), Ibris Elba (Stringer Bell, The Wire), and Stephen Moyer (Bill, True Blood) were British.

I first realized Hugh Laurie was British during a rerun of the Friends episode where he's sitting next to Rachel on the plane

I knew Laurie from 101 Dalmations

Lennie James shocked my wife but I remembered him from Snatch unlike Steven Graham.

Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book and a movie I enjoyed. Still, doesn't seem like he's a British dude.

well, to be fair, it's different. supposedly in the UK, another brit can tell (1) where you're from and (2) your social class after 5-10 seconds of speaking. we don't have that in America. gaining that full proficiency of the region/class is probably impossible
It does exist somewhat in America but no not to that extent
Yeah, like in certain cities...

Wales/England is a bigger version of Walker/Watson or Shreveport/Bossier. The welsh will tell you that they're British.

Wales is part of Great Britan. So they are right when they tell you that.
