As a Catholic, I think that leadership in the Church deserved to be criticized for covering things up and only addressing things after the cases of abuse were made public.

That said, things have changed significantly since then and I don't think criticism of Pope Francis is warranted at least for that.

Just my opinion, but the movie was a good one but not deserving of special recognition especially in that field of candidates. There's always a political bent one way or another with these award shows.

Hollywood calling out another institution on sexual abuse is the height of hypocrisy.

But they revel in the blind eye toward themselves and pontificating toward others...as I mentioned on page 1 of this thread....Spotlight was Oscar bait...and was going to win for all the obvious reasons.

Its an important story that needed to be told and a good movie but lets be honest - its an easy and the only religious target allowed and encouraged.

Now that you mention it, they sure as hell did!

Probably thought he had died years ago.

Abe Vigoda passed in January, so he'd be on the in memoriam segment next year I believe.

Man, I am pissed. I bet The Martian and Mad Max (both at +10,000) to win best picture. Hello! Spotlight , which also had the title "The Catholic Church Sucks" , wins . It was sitting at +10,000 as well. How the hell did I miss that! All those lib-tards hate the Catholic Church! I am kicking myself for that huge swing and miss.

David Bowie and Alan Rickman also passed in January 2016...and they were both included.

The same Hollywood that celebrated pedophile Roman Polanski. Hollywood is our sodom and Gomorrah.

No matter how many times, it won't be enough.

Wow... some soggy Cherrios this morning. Just some general thoughts...

-- Mad Max won the night with 6 Oscars, yet didn't win any of the major awards. Losing Best Picture will actually cement its reputation as a great film, and it will be brought up for years as an Oscar snub. They even won for losing.

-- Inarritu winning back-to-back Director awards bothers me way too much. Hitchcock won zero, Scorcese finally got his first, and this flashy but fairly pedestrian director wins two... in a row? BS. He's all style over substance. He's the director that Nolan's critics think he is.

-- Ex Machina winning for visual effects was super cool. They made seamless effects on a budget, and I think there's value in honoring a film that didn't have a near unlimited budget to make its FX. Besides, it was a great film, and I'm glad it took home something.

-- Amy winning Best Doc over Look of Silence was the worst award of the night. Look of Silence is a great film, and an essential one at that, looking at some horrific things that people managed to survive (or not). As a companion to Act of Killing, it is the best series of docs, maybe ever. And they give the award to Amy, a fiim about a narcissistic drug addict who made fun of the fact she was addicted to drugs, and now we're supposed to pretend its a tragedy. It's a PR film. It's difficult to be famous? Maybe. But not as difficult as getting hacked up by machetes, while we're on the topic.

-- The Animation category was f'n loaded. Any one of those films likely would have won in a different year. I'm pouring one out for Studio Ghibli, which claims this is their last film.

-- Spotlight is a fine winner. There was no singularly great film this year, unless you count Mad Max, so I'm all for spreading the wealth. But I doubt it will be remembered as a great film.

meh. Yes, what happened was terrible and it needs to be brought to light. However (I never saw the movie so I don't know if they did this in the movie but it doesn't really seem like they did) it also needs to be stressed what the Vatican, especially pope Francis, is doing right now to correct the problem

The Catholic Church in particular and religion in general is the problem so I don't see him correcting that.

No one is calling it a snub and no one ever thought it was going to win anyway...

Higher percentage of Muslims who believe in car bombs than Catholics who believe in fricking little boys but by all means let 's paint one with a broad brush and "not discriminate" against the other.

He, like many others, just didn't make the broadcast cut due to time constraints I suppose. Here's the academy's online list of all of them...

Tina Fey on the Oscars..

Being at the Oscars… halfway through I was like this is some real Hollywood bulls--t,” she dished to Howard Stern. “Everyone’s telling me like what to do and it was like, people are yelling at me about rape and corporate greed, but really it’s climate change, and I was like ‘Guys, pick a lane. Hey everyone, we’re going to fix everything tonight. And also, you’re all rich. Why are you yelling at me about corporate greed? You’re all so rich.’”
