Yes, I haven’t seen tick tick boom yet but I don’t see any other movie this year that transitioned a character from being to unlikeable to someone you actually gave a shite about

any current wokeness complaints aside (which i usually agree with,) Smith was exceptional in King Richard and completely deserving. BC was great in Power of the Dog, but i prefer boring oscar-bait movies that nobody wants to watch to stop winning anyways (recognizing it still won Best Drama.)

I'm not an overly tennis guy but my wife and her family ate, breathed, and slept tennis for 20+ years. they didn't overly like Richard Williams, but had a ton of respect for how he got the girls to where they are now and said that his depiction was pretty dang spot on from his behavior in the 90s and early 00s.

I do t think Power of Dog was that Oscar hairy. I only watched it last night but the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it. It’s a character study movie.

I didnt watch this so I'm not going to hate on it winning, but I have a hard time imagining it being better than Mare of Eastown.
Of all of the awards shows, the GG's have the most blatant history of bribery, racism, and general ineptitude. Their S.O.P. has always been to go with the Oscar/Emmy buzz, unless someone pays them off to slide in a Pia Zadora or a Sharon Stone. Getting busted for having zero voters of African descent was pretty hilarious. It's as if the Grammy Awards were voted on by 100% black artists, and Rap and R&B won every award, year after year.

meh...anybody think this was anything more than a straight to stream quality film?

Lol at that lame take. I bet you also wonder why the theaters are dominated by franchises now.

Yeah I don’t think Power of the Dog was Oscar bait at all.

A costume drama, a biopic of a well-respected historical figure, the 85th Jane Austen adaptation, or a movie that echoes conventional wisdom on race or LGBT issues…those are Oscar bait.

Power of the Dog wouldn’t fit into that. Neither for that matter would a movie like Sorry to Bother You from a couple of years ago, that is just too left wing for most voters.

Passing would be the most obvious Oscar bait film I’ve seen this year (I haven’t seen West Side Story).

The show was virtual this year due to wokeness and Covid.

Too bad. One thing I love about the Golden Globes are the references to Salma Hayek's golden globes.

Did you watch the movie?

Again, I’m not hating on it. Well acted. Nice scenery. BC was a great character.

But it was boring Oscar bait.

I like Kings Speech and Nomadland. They were still kinda boring Oscar bait.

There is a world of difference between this and a film like Milk.

This isn’t an uplifting tale about a gay teenager who leaves his rural background and becomes successful as a writer Boston. Or a tragic character study about a gay kid who is tormented by evil cowboys.

A film isn’t woke or Oscarbait just because there are gay people or black people in the movie.

Without being too spoiler-heavy in this more general thread, the movie makes it seem like it’s going to be Brokeback Mountain 70 years earlier and instead goes in a much more Usual Suspects direction.

King’s Speech, The Darkest Hour, The Artist (all of which I liked) are Oscar bait. I’m not sure I would say the same about Nomadland, which I didn’t like.

****spoiler****

It’s literally a tragic character study about an evil gay Cowboy, tormented and killed by a boy.

***end spoiler***

I’m not calling woke. I never called it woke. I said I liked it. I just said it was boring. And slow character study movies tend to be Oscar baity. We can disagree on the term or it’s usage but when I saw the trailer, I said that looks like Oscar bait.

I watched it. I liked it. I still think it was OB. And that’s ok.

I tried to keep it vague because my spacing to hide spoilers is always a disaster on my iPhone.

For me, Oscar bait is defined by being formulaic. For example, King Richard is a very good movie but it’s formulaic.

Power of the Dog messes with audience expectations and is far less formulaic because of it.

I agree that is very slow-paced, and it’s the reason why I think it’s likely a top 10 movie for the year but not top going to crack my top 100 all time.

Being the Ricardos is also fairy Oscar baity and a movie I enjoyed.
