Blade Runner 2049 or Arrival. Can’t choose the Villeneuve film I like more.

The Prestige

The Fountain

Blazing Saddles

Good Will Hunting

Shawshank is interchangeable with any of them

So my criteria for a perfect film is essentially this. Nothing extraneous; everything relevant.
quote:

Vigorous writing is concise.

A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.

This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

William Strunk Jr.,
The Elements of Style

In no particular order:

Casablanca
Twelve O'Clock High
Man On Fire
The Best Years Of Our Lives
White Christmas

The Alternate Five:
The Godfather and Godfather 2 (treating them as one film)
Singing In The Rain
The Thing (original black and white)
Inglorious Basterds
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

Honorable Mentions:
Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels
The Departed
The Wizard Of Oz
The Book Of Eli
The Green Mile

Master and Commander
Warrior
Shawshank
Prisoners
Bloodsport-It's different than the rest of my choices, but as another poster stated for the criteria of being a perfect movie, I wouldn't change one thing about it.

I struggled not to put 2049 in my list, but I think that the K and Deckard fight shouldn’t have happened. Other than that, perfect.

I just discovered this film relatively recently (so mad I've been deprived) and must say it is freaking amazing! Soooooo ahead of its time. The message could just as easily apply today. So many amazing scenes in that damn movie.

I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

The world is a business.

Simply amazing film.
