For those who don't know, Three Body Problem is a book from China that deals with Earth receiving a message from outer space, set in the back drop of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and its impacts on modern China.

What if Earth received a message from another civilization on another planet? What would the cultural impact be? How would they respond? Are the aliens friendly?

Three Body Problem is the first book in a trilogy called Remembrance of Earth's Past.

I absolutely love these novels, so I'm hoping they don't frick this up. But then I saw "From the creators of Game of Thrones" in the description and lost all hope.

The trailer makes it look like an action series, which it isn't. There are some part in the book that deal with virtual reality, so I guess the scifi/action movie scenes in the trailer are from that.

Awesome. I read the book about 3 or 4 months ago and really enjoyed it. I couldn't really make myself commit to reading the rest of the sries so I've only read that first one, so I'm exccited to have this come out.

For an entire book on the subject of how knowledge of other advanced life would affect our modern society, there's a book by Bryce Zabel called "A.D, After Disclosure", which takes a look at the sociopolitical consequences in the event of that occurrence.

I'm reading this book currently and I am curious how they translate this subject to the screen.

Lots of internal dialogue. Lots of advanced math/physics discussions. Lots of weird/goofy situations when they play the game.

If anything, you need to read the second book, The Dark Forest, which really dives into why advanced civilizations aren't communicating with each other.

How to translate the subject, and will they anglicize the actors? Just about everyone I've suggested this book to were turned off by the Chinese names.

The book did an excellent job of explaining these things. Hopefully the series follows the book's lead on this.

Which was some of the most interesting parts of the book. I just hope they don't turn it into Ready Player One to get some action into the series.

Were the books pretty dense and difficult to read? I'm on book 3 of the Hyperion series and the going can be slow.

I had heard about this trailer coming out so I searched for it on YouTube and found this guy's review of a Chinese-produced 30-episode series of the first book that came out a few months ago:

The New Three-Body Problem Show is Amazing...but not for Everyone

The series is available on YouTube. I decided to watch it. I'm only on the first episode so I have no opinion yet. Here's the first episode:

The concepts can get kind of out there, but the book does a good job of explaining them to a layman. As I mentioned, a lot of people have issues with the Chinese names.

The book goes deep into explaining the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and its impact on society and academia.

Yeah, this is nothing like Hyperion. 3 Body Problem is more grounded in physics, and not time traveling scourges like The Shrike.

it does a good job of conveying the information in layman's terms. You definitely don't need ot be a physicist or science geek to undrestand what they're talkign about.

Pretty impressed by the trailer, but that can be deceiving. I have high hopes but low expectations they'll be able to translate the books but am looking forward to it.

Trailer looks good, but I can't imagine executing all three of these books visually. First book is somewhat grounded (other than the VR stuff), but it starts to get pretty out there in book 2 and really out there in book 3.

Not in a bad way, but it juggles some pretty complex stuff.

The book series is amazing, but I agree that this seems tough to translate to the screen. They did it well with Dune, another series that was thought impossible to effectively translate to cinema, so I'm holding out hope.

To be fair, they were knocking it out of the park when they had source material to use. GoT got bad when they ran out of books. Luckily this series is complete.

I think it looks great. But if they stick to the source material and make it all the way to book 3 they are going to lose a lot of people.

I probably should expect this series to have a vaguely descriptive name of what the series is about like Contact or something similar.

quote:

3 Body Problem

Oh, FFS. What a dumb fricking name!

I'm sure there is a part of the story that gives meaning to the name after an easter egg hunt to find the connection, but that'd be the equivalent of the movie Contact being called "Hadden's on Mir" or "Testimony of Faith" or "Prime Numbers", all elements of the film, yet all dumb fricking names for that movie.

quote:

Remembrance of Earth's Past

So this must be about Pangea? The dinosaurs? or even further back, like the solar nebula? Oh no, I forgot, it's about Earth receiving a message from outer space & its impact on modern China. How silly of me!

quote:

Game of Thrones

Now, that described the series perfectly without being too on-the-nose..or requiring an easter egg hunt to make the connection.

You’ve picked some really odd points to complain about.

That's my wife's issue. She likes it but the names are definitely an issue. She's smart, so that's not the issue
