2021 Horror In Review

I've seen a few people say that 2021 was a terrible year for horror, and I find those people only focused on the major box office releases. Two of the biggest franchise releases in 2021 were duds, and while upsetting, the bulk of good horror came from the Indie and Small Budget scene.
2021 lacked that "all time" great movie, but it had many good to solid horror offerings. Television especially shown this year in a big way.
Here's my list of the top 10 Horror of 2021 with some Honorable Mentions thrown in for good measure. (Disclaimer: Though I tried there are some movies I missed as I couldn't watch every horror release, sadly.)
1. The Vigil
2. Saint Maud
3. Candyman
4. The Deep House
5. Malignant
6. Fear Street Trilogy
7. Antlers
8. Wrong Turn
9. The Advent Calendar
10. Jakob's Wife
Honorable Mentions:
Censor
A Quiet Place 2
No One Gets Out Alive
Caveat
The Superdeep
TV Shows:
Midnight Mass - My #1
What We Do In The Shadows
Chucky
Yellowjackets
Evil
Squid Games
Black Summer
Biggest Let Downs:
Halloween Kills
The Conjuring 3
Pleasant Surprises:
Slumber Party Massacre

Malignant and Antlers being top 10 proves it was a down year for horror.

Saint Maud
This was an excellent movie that ended well.
They billed this as a horror movie and it sorta cheapens it. This was a terrific, slow burn psychological thriller.

never heard of this and just looked up the trailer...

Really? I thought this movie was pretty bad. Nowhere near the fun of the original, and the story just kind of sucked IMO.

Black Summer
I think you and I have talked about this before...I know you love zombie shite, and while Black Summer is decent enough to throw a watch to, it's certainly not "good" by any means. Nothing in that show makes a single bit of sense. IMO it shouldn't be anywhere near any sort of "best of" list.

I'm interested in that one, as I want to like the VHS series so bad. But they just aren't good at all, and have gone substantially downhill since the first one (which was only decent in itself). I still may give it a shot though, since I just like the VHS series premise. The trailer looks pretty bad though honestly.
This thread shows me that I have not watched hardly any new horror though, as the only others I've seen that you listed are Yellowjackets, Quiet Place 2, and Squid Game.

I went into it not expecting to enjoy it at all, and thought there was no reason to remake it, but was surprised they went into an entirely different direction that made the movie feel fresh.

I personally love the zombie stuff (obviously) and feel it's pedal to the gas format is enjoyable for high-action zombies.

It's like most. Some good. Some meh. And one really excellent short that features a person having to watch over a body in a funeral home.

Disagree. Malignant was pure fun and Antlers had a great monster and a story that felt fresh focusing on folklore that isn't showcased enough.

I disagree with the premise that being branded horror cheapens a movie.

Fantastic out of the gate and was a complete disaster by the end.

3. Malignant
4. Saint Maud
5. Sator
6. Lamb
7. Titane
8. Censor

Titane is the best horror films of 2021 IMO

I watched it a few days ago and just did not care for it the way a lot of people have. But I’m also not a huge fan of body horror.

Yeah you're right, just looked them up on IMDB. Guess my plex app is full of shite, has them listed as 2021.

Haven’t seen Antlers but I also enjoyed Malignant.

Halloween Kills was better than half of your top 10.
