I'd like to know what the "Austin music scene" sounds like. I'm not sure what you mean.

And I hate Broken Bells as well.

I honestly despise Broken Bells. Seen 'em twice now and they are possibly the least engaging live act I've ever seen. Their album is a perfect summary of the Austin music scene, and not in a good way.

I agree with you on their live act but I think the album is solid. I don't really get what you mean about the Austin music scene...

Another new album leaked - The debut full length from Maps and Atlases - Perch Patchwork. You can listen here: LINK or Google blogsearch perch patchwork to download.

This could be one of my favorites for 2010. It's a pretty big departure from their sound on their EPs, which are also awesome.

Baloo, did you know that James Murphy(LCD Soundsystem) produced the Free Energy album?
I do now.

My hatred of austin's music scene comesfrom living near Austin. It's self-congratulatory, which is fine from a support local artist sense, but bad from a nobody has an original idea sort of thing. austin is the home of the droniest, most boring, most cookie cutter crap indie rock bands in the world. Spoon, excepted (and to a lesser extent, the Octopus Prject). Going to a show in Austin means standing around crossed-armed with your fellow hipsters, drinking a Pabst, and thinking of your show review you will never post on cokemachineglow. It is devoid of joy. Dive in, people.

Speaking of diving in: The Thermals have just announced a September release for their album. I'm beyond stoked.

I agree that Austin is a hipster haven, but I see things differently. Since Austin has such a big music scene, of course you are going to see more of these hipster indie bands that aren't anything special. But there are also lots of other great bands that come about because the scene is so big. Check out Muchos Backflips or Tornahdo for instance.

Sorry. This music of today just sucks to me. TO ME< I said...not knocking y'all...to each his own, but I am just bummed that I cannot find anything worth liking

I'm kind of like this too Pisces but I've found from threads like this music I regularly listen too now.

I really like the Black Keys although I'm not sure about this new one. Maybe it will grow on me. Dr. Dog is pretty good. I like Band of Horses.

However, I still think the only good Spoon album is Kill the Moonlight and Grizzly Bear sucks. Sorry guys, they do. Their pub guys deserves more credit than they do.

I agree. Not a fan. I don't hate them like I hate Animal Collective (yeah, I said it), but i'm not a fan.

The Black Keys, man. That's a friggin' band.

If I had to list my bands of the decade (which would be its own thread), off the top of my head, I'd go Drive-by Truckers, Hold Steady, New Pornographers, then the Black Keys (Pavement misses the cut due to the decade cutoff). All have put out multiple great rock n roll albums. Particularly the Truckers.

My list would be a little more mainstream than yours. But I dig on some Drive-by Truckers too.

Hold Steady is that band I always like when I hear them but always to forget to check them out more.

I'm mixed on New Ponographers.

I just really like the raw sound of Black Keys.

I like a few Grizzly Bear songs, but I definitely couldn't just turn on an album and let it play. Same goes for Animal Collective, but I like them more than GB.

Bands of the decade. Hmmm. 1-4 are pretty easy.

1. Brand New.
2. The Black Keys
3. Death Cab. I don't care what people say. Death Cab kills. And Narrow Stairs was a tight album.
4. Modest Mouse
This is where it gets tuff...
5. Cold War Kids/The Arcade Fire/Gaslight Anthem/Ghostland Observatory/Manchestar Orchestra/ Motion City Soundtrack

And a ton of others could be in the conversation.

Built to Spill is my favorite band ever, but I'd say their 90s stuff dwarfs their 00s stuff (I still love the new stuff too though).

My top 5 of the 00s would be:

1. The National
2. Animal Collective/Panda bear
3. Spencer Krug bands (Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown)
4. Modest Mouse (Moon and Antarctica is my favorite 00 album)
5. Radiohead

1. The National
2. The Black Keys
3. Drive-By Truckers
4. The Avett Brothers
5. NMAS

If not my list would include Wilco, Built to Spill, Radiohead and Modest Mouse for sure

You know, there are other music venues besides the "indie, hipster" places that you don't like.
You are making quite the sweeping generalization.

4. The Avett Brothers

"I would be sad" literally tells the story of my brothers life right now. And he was at a really small show Dawes was having in California. Coner Oberst, the Avett Bros, Bill Murray and a few others were there hanging out too. So my brother tells one of the Avett brothers how much he likes their music. Ends up gettin to hang out with them all night. And Bill Murray bought all his drinks.
Yeah, cool story bro.

Love, love, LOVE the Avetts. I and Love and You probably best sums up where I am in my life right now. I just love those guys. Great stuff.

And, yes, when describing the "Austin scene", I left out "indie". I know they have a coutnry scene, but I don't know much about it since I don't listen to country a whole lot. It's their indie scene which is grossly overrated. I'm finding with my sweeping condemnation of austin. Because no matter where I go in that town, I seem to run into the same thing.
