gorilla vs bear core sounds awesome. As does zydecore.
I'm with you on using a subgenre as a descriptor to just help someone out who's never heard the band. It's an easy shorthand. I just hate when it becomes an argument over whether this band is truly authentic screamo. Who cares?

I kind of dig genre discussions in all forms of art. I think it's crucial in determining what is good or bad, or what the standards are.
I think this goes along with the search for those "perfect" forms or entities...

The Love Below > Speakerboxx IMO. But he seems to have done a nice job with this one.

Man I have been missing out on "Minus the Bear" Dicovered them a few weeks ago with their new song My Time off of their cd Omni. Have been downloading their stuff ever since. Some great stuff.

not sure if anyone is a fan, but Menomena's new album is streaming. LINK
this is my first album of theirs that i have listened to, but one of their side projects (Ramona Falls) was one of my favorite albums of '09. I am only two songs in on the stream, but both tracks were great. I have high hopes for the rest of it.

I've only heard one song off this album, so I don't know if it's "kick arse" worthy yet, but the song is pretty good.
