most coaches will want the best players available, as opposed forgoing rankings for the best fits. They have enough faith in their coaching to believe they can make the pieces fit together, even though we know that's not always or even often the case.
The other answer is that there was a lot of concern several years ago that Duke had fallen behind Roy and then Calipari in recruiting. Duke had some down years where they were whiffing on prospects like Harrison Barnes, Brandan Wright, John Wall, etc. Part of the one and done recruiting drive has definitely been to keep the best players away from your rivals. Duke got way more aggressive about going after those type of prospects early.

Longest run was 7 in a row but was a long time ago. Even their recent title is years older than anyone they recruit.

Was interested so I looked it up. Duke’s last two title teams starting 5 were:
2015 - senior, junior, 3 freshmen (Winslow, Jones, Okafor)
2010 - 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and a sophomore
2015 - senior, junior, 3 freshmen (Winslow, Jones, Okafor)
2010 - 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and a sophomore

During the 2015 season, I remember someone asking Coach K where he ranked the current team among all of the teams he had at Duke. Coach K laughed and said they weren't even ranked in the top 10.

That 2010 squad is even less impressive from a talent standpoint imo

Just looked at 2019 NBA Mock Draft and Duke has 3 of the top 4 players projected picked.
Coach k will be looked at under a larger microscope with this type talent coming in.
If he loses there will be those who will be questioning a lot in terms of his coaching. Will be entertaining though.

They have #1, 6, and 7 from this year's recruiting class playing now. Had #2, 4, 13, 14 in 2016. He coaches the freaking Olympic team, this is old hat for him.
