4.9 at LSU Camp, I had one of the fastest shuttle times in the whole camp though

In all practicality the 40 is worthless

I was the fastest kid my age growing up and played cornerback, but I can't remember at all what my 40 time was. If it was good, you'd all think I was full of shite anyway, and so would people IRL, so whatever.

you're right, i should word that better. below average among athletes. i played soccer, and we pretty much never timed 40s but a couple times we did it with some football guys and i was faster than the big boys but slower than the fast guys.

4.6. I was the fastest guy on my high school team, but that was at a small school in Minnesota with all white boys. The average time was probably 5.4.
I was a sprinter and ran D3 track in college. Nothing fantastic, but usually place somewhere around 4th-8th in most meets. To convert HH (hand held) to FAT (fully automatic time), round up the hundreths and add .24. Thus a 4.62 becomes a 4.94.

What sorcery is this? That's dumb. You'd have to assume the keeper is always stopping it early and never late

Yeah but 40's start by the runner's first movement. FAT is by a gun. The best runner's in the world have .2 reaction, thus the reason for the adding of .24.

Probably around a 4.7. In HS I was a basketball player only after sophomore year so we didn't time 40s. I could do a mile in 5:15 though.

In FAT time, the clock begins at the flash of the gun. We use a special scope and bullets which give off a bright flash. The scope and is hooked to a computer which begins the timing of the race. I've timed track meets for years, and in reality, it's more like a .35 difference. The .24 became the standard because the test was done using experienced timers in world class meets. A 4.65 HH time would most likely be a 5.0 FAT time. We use a FAT system and hire back up timers. I often compare the HH times to FAT times and without fail the times are .3 to .4 seconds slower.

This.

Apparently anyone who claims to have run below a 4.8 in high school is full of shite because they obviously should have played/should be playing college ball.

I was one of the fastest players on the team but I was also a small fry. I was 5'8" and 140 lbs when I graduated high school in '06. Now I'm 5'9" and weigh about 165 lbs.
