lulz. You wouldn't be NBA commissioner for very long.

Kobe got fined 100K for calling a ref a gay slur and the NBA crashed down on him to set an example. They will make an example out of Sterling as well, I hope. I wonder if they factor in that unlike Kobe, Sterling was not in a NBA setting when he said what he said.

I have yet to see a zebra that has changed its stripes. And Sterling is not about to become the most tolerant person in the NBA.

I wonder if the NBA has some kind of clause when you take ownership of a team...something along the lines of "conduct detrimental to the team" that is often in player contracts? It is possible there is something like that b/c the team owners vote to let new owners in and I would imagine they have considered what to do in such a circumstance.

The NBA has to take a strong stand here or else risk a boycott by their players and a large portion of the fan-base.

If possible I would force him to sell or at least remove him from operations. If that is not possible, then a huge fine, a suspension, and have the owners vote on something that would avoid a similar situation in the future.

It really sucks for Clippers fans (are there any?). LAC is not gonna get any good free agent players anymore as long as he is the owner. And at a time when they finally became more relevant than the Lakers.

Anything possible to get him to get him to sell the team. But I'm not sure what that would be under their existing agreement.

Precisely this.

And, no, I have never met a real live Clippers fan

Or to sell majority ownership maybe if they want to go that route

You guys are handing out your punishments from a selfish point of view. You have to realize you have 400+ players who are angry and would lose any and all respect for you if you just slapped him on the wrist. I am calling for a huge fine and at LEAST a year ban. I may even consider a lifetime but eh... It's times like these you have to lay down the law. I also would need to know if that tape is authentic first and foremost.

Clippers fans enabled Sterling for years.

He would trot out terrible teams that he spent no money on, yet fans would still go. The Clippers were consistently one of the most financially successful teams. There was never any backlash over him being a complete a-hole or the team sucking like there has been in other cities (Portland against the Jail Blazers for example)

Obviously the only thing to do here is to ask Obama what should be done and let him handle it.

If I had a grandfather, he'd look like Sterling

If DS would have told her not to take pics with dirty former Lakers and players for teams owned by dirty former Lakers, he would have been a cult hero for the anti-laker fans. Instead, he couldn't hide his stripes.

ETA: And that tape would not have been leaked.

they were also one of the least valuable teams for such a long time. forbes consistently listed them in the bottom 10 and for a team in LA, that is unacceptable

I'm not sure how much power the Commissioner has in this situation. I'm pretty sure he can't force Sterling to sell the team (which would just make him richer anyway). Maybe he can force him to not go to games?

Ultimately I think it's the public and players that have to force a change. Either the players have to refuse to play for a team owned by him (not going to happen) or fans have to start an effective boycott of all Clippers corporate sponsors.

The reason I say players won't cause a change is even if good free agents aren't going to LA, they'll still get the guys where it's either "out of the League" or play for the clippers.

Nothing outrageous. Freedom of speech.

The NBA isn't the government.

And to answer the OP, unwinding his interests in the team wouldn't be over the top IMO.

This only matters if you are looking to sell the team or need to borrow against the value of it. Sterling always cared more about making $ than winning until they moved to Staples.
