Don't worry about it

the 49ers were what KC was last year. A team with a lot of good players, but with a crappy head coach.
In the final year before harbaugh, they had just drafted these players who are still on the team:
Anthony Davis (OT)
Mike Iupati (OG)
Navorro Bowman (ILB)
Anthony Dixon (RB)
They had on that team and still have on their current team some notable players:
Michael Crabtree
Vernon Davis
Frank Gore
Alex Boone
Joe Staley
Justin Smith
Ahmad Brooks
Patrick Willis
Andy Lee
It's not like he inherited nothing, that's 12 starters right there and a reserve.
In '11 they drafted
Aldon Smith
Colin Kaepernick
Chris Culliver
Kendall Hunter
He's a damn good coach, but I'm taking CSP based on his 8 year resume vs. harbaugh's 3 year resume.
I mean look at Rex Ryan. Went to AFC championship in '09 and '10 and then fell off due to failure at the QB position and his defensive players getting old. Consistency/longevity over time is important as well. if harbaugh keeps it up for another 3 years with the same results, I'd take harbaugh.

Nobody said that he didn't inherit a lot of talent, but taking over a team that had been on an 8 year playoff drought and going 14-4, 13-5-1 and 14-5 with 3 straight NFCCG appearances is pretty impressive no matter who you're talking about.

Harbaugh's a douche but I'd still probably take him over Payton as a head coach. People saying he inherited a lot of talent… it's not as if Payton doesn't have a lot of talent on the Saints. And Harbaugh as done more with less talent in recent years. Alex Smith was the best QB he had and he's on par with Bobby Hebert.

I'd lean Payton until Harbaugh proves he can win the big one and leave his imprint on a team.
Both seem to have an eye for talent, but I'd like a bigger track record from Harbaugh before putting him on Payton's track. And if you want to argue that Payton's obscure offensive picks only play well because of his system then I fail to see how that isn't another credit to him as a coach. There are only 7 rounds in the draft, plus UDFAs, after that its coaching coaching coaching to make sure you get the right mix.

I would say taking a team whose city had just been devastated by Katrina to the NFC championship game in year 1 and eventually leading them to a SB is far more impressive than anything Harbaugh has done.

harbaugh is winning with an already loaded team. payton rebuilt this franchise.
They weren't winning before he got there

I love Sean Payton, but drew Brees had a lot to do with that

And who convinced Brees to come to NOLA?

has anyone said either one? I dont think you can go wrong with either coach.

- That one magical year doesn't equate to automatic superiority in the same manner that Coughlin's two doesn't make him the superior to Payton. Harbaugh has been the consistently superior coach, cemented by 36-32.

So one year doesn't matter but one (away) game does? Got it
Don't get me wrong. Harbaugh is a nice coach. But the name of the game is winning a championship.

And he also found Kaepernick,
And SP found Drew Brees just coming off what should have been a career ending injury when no one else wanted him. Brees under SP has been epic ever since.
Point: Payton
quote:
Harbaugh inherited a 6-10 team with no QB and Carroll inherited a 5-11 team with no QB
Payton inherited a disaster zone and in the first year was one game away from the Superbowl.
edt: Any coach who can go to the NFCCG with 3 starting white LB's his first year has got my vote

The fact that no one else really wanted him other than the Dolphins who gave him the medical runaround?

Have you seen the players on that defense?.. SP came in and cleaned house after Katrina and went to the NFC title game with a 7th rounder starting at WR and a group of misfits on D.. Deuce and Drew were the only note worthy players on that team.. Its funny that people are laughing off what Harbaugh inherited, i think an entire unit beats out 1 player any day of the week.. all he has to do is make sure his QB doesn't turn the ball over and he's basically a guaranteed a playoff spot with a beast of a running back that he also inherited
That's why I said recent years. Some of you seem to forget the Saints Super Bowl win was four years ago.
Also this whole 'Katrina' thing. It's not like Payton had to get out the hammer and nails and rebuild the city himself. There were some early logistical struggles, sure, but don't confuse things with emotion.

Look, we get it, you would rather have Harbaugh over Payton as your head coach. That's fine. But you look foolish digging your heels in acting as if the other option is inconceivable.

Harbaugh easily. Look at what each has done since Harbaugh entered the league
Posted on 1/21/14 at 11:44 pm to Big Moe
Both are great coaches. But you cant say its about championships when Harbaugh has only been here for 3 years and Payton for 8, not to mention Harbaughs 3 years all resulted in NFC Champ game or Super Bowl
I think Payton has been the best offensive coach in the game since he started with the saints in 06
But i think Harbaugh is a better all around coach, whether people think hes an a-hole or not
