Didn't even realize he basically only played a decade. Some amazing stats for such a short period of time. His '94 '95 '96 '98 seasons are absolutely incredible. He would have had a legit shot if he had compiled some more numbers. Was only 34 when he reitred and had 23 HR 103 RBI .816 OPS. If I remember correctly it was his hip that caused him to retire?

Joey Belle is a hall of famer, Albert Belle isn't.

Bonds 01-04. I don't even give a frick about the fifth year. Best hitting any of us will see in our lifetimes.

10 years is an extraordinarily short career for a Hall of Famer. Longevity is a skill. Only great players can play for a long time. Belle couldn't do it.

He couldn't do it because of an arthritic hip; not because his skills deteriorated.

Tough crap.
What happened is what happened. There are no "what if's" in the Hall. I don't care why, I care what. The what is he only played 10 years. That's an incredibly thin resume for the Hall.

His 2000 season wasn't too shabby either.
49 homeruns, 106 RBIs, .306 BA, .440 OBP, .688 SLG, 1.127 OPS

At some point the writers should smarten up and look past superficial counting stats. You figure they would've done that after the '90s. Ten years is a long time for sustained excellence.

one of my favorite players. I even modeled my swing after his growing up.

It's not superficial. Only playing ten years is a big deal. We're not talking about racking up counting stats (which is valuable, by the way, and more valuable than people realize), we're talking about actually being able to play.
Belle only played 10 seasons, which is the Hall minimum for eligibility for the ballot.

Lou Gehrig '27-'31
.373, 174 Rbis, 410 total bases
-those are his median averages (he bested those #s twice in 5 year period)

Hall of Fame is for the best players not the best players who were still good for 5 more years past their prime. If you were the best you belong what you do before and after doesn't take away from that. If you want to say longevity is a tie breaker I agree. A guy like Don Sutton is a good example borderline if he was one of the best, but insane longevity puts him over the top.

Dale Murphy was better in his prime. I'd put him in before Belle, and Murphy's not getting in on a bet. The only short career guys I would put in are those who died (Clemente) or had their time shortened by factors beyond their control (Jackie Robinson and racism, Ted Williams and WWII -- though he still played forever).

Belle clubhouse stories are the best
quote:
Belle preferred to have the clubhouse cold, below 60 degrees, and when one chilly teammate turned up the heat, Belle walked over, turned down the thermostat and smashed it with his bat. His nickname, thereafter, was "Mr. Freeze"

Could've played more.

Murphy .265/.346/.469 121 OPS+
Belle .295/.365/.565 144 OPS+
Belle has 4 seasons with an OPS over 1.000 (Murphy had none) and 4 seasons with an OBP of .400+ (Murphy had 1). He also has 4 seasons with a BA higher than Murphy's career high .302. Belle has 4 season with an OPS+ higher than Murphy's highest.
In over 2000 more ABs Murphy has only 17 more HRs and 27 more RBI.
Belle >>>>> Murphy
