I guess it depends on how you define worst team, if it’s W/L record then probably they were just a handful of games over .500 but won a poor division. But that team was plagued with injuries throughout the year and got healthy late. Pujols and Rolen missed some time but Edmonds, Molina, Wainright, and Mulder all missed significant time. But they got healthy at the right time.

The '06 Cardinals were an 83 win club (82 win pythag), and their rotation included the following pitchers:

Chris Carpenter - 3.09 ERA in 32 GS
Jeff Suppan - 4.12 ERA in 32 GS
Jason Marquis - 6.02 ERA in 33 GS
Jeff Weaver - 5.18 ERA in 15 GS
Mark Mulder - 7.14 ERA in 17 GS
Anthony Reyes - 5.06 ERA in 17 GS

This was Wainwright's rookie season and he only threw out of the 'pen that year.

Their team OPS+ was 97. They were ranked 6th in the NL in runs scored and 9th in the NL (out of 16 teams) in ERA. That team was objectively mediocre by basically any metric, but they certainly did get hot at the right time. The only weaker WS winner is probably the '87 Twins.

2005 White Sox

Arguably the worst pitching rotation to ever win a title.

2.84 ERA in the playoffs and 4 straight complete games in the ALCS says GTFO.

The Astros when a trash can was their MVP.

Yet the Astros had the best road record in MLB that year and won the WS on the road in Dodger Stadium.

Anyone who is still spewing this nonsense are just like that meme of Fauci holding up a duck and telling the masses “this is a cat” and they all repeat after him that “this is a cat”.

Just mindless and ignorant behavior.

Using this standard that makes the 2009 Saints the worst Super Bowl champion

Good to see the theory holds across sports.

2006 Cardinals. End of discussion.

You might be on to something, but can we call it even for having the ‘04 Cardinals being one of the best teams of the last quarter century that just ran into a buzzsaw of historic momentum in the World Series?

I guess so. That team had the best lineup in team history since I followed them. Despite winning 105 games, the rotation was good. But not great. And I thought that might come back to bite them in the playoffs. Almost every World Series champion back then had a dominant ace. And Carpenter broke down the last month of the season. The Red Sox won 98 games that year. And had a deep lineup with 2 future HOF'ers in the rotation. And were a freight train going into the World Series. They were no pushover.

Even though they won fewer games the next year, I thought the 2005 team with a MVP and Cy Young winner was better equipped to win it all more so than either 2004 or 2006 team.

The 02 Bucs and 99 Rams were, much worse before and after.

Kind of missing the point PJs “standard” was idiotic. What a franchise is/was historically is irrelevant. The 2015 Royals had the best record in the AL and 4th best in MLB they were a worthy champ just like the 09 Saints 99 Rams and 02 Bucs

Weaver had a great postseason and was the WS winning pitcher in game 5 8IP 1ER 9K. That team really set the table for the dominance to come over the next decade or so.

Albert Pujols' 2006: .331 49HR 137RBI 92BB 50SO 1.102 OPS
Ryan Howard at 5.2 WAR won MVP over Albert's 8.5 WAR that year.

Waino striking out Beltran looking to eliminate the Mets after Yadi's late HR. GOATed in history.
