Guy Lewis deserves mention. He made it to the Final Four twice with Elvin Hayes and 3 times with Phi Slamma Jamma.

List is garbage without Dale Brown

You don't accidentally make the Final Four 5 times. Guy Lewis is and was UH basketball. They obviously should have won a title, but he is not near the bottom of worst coaches to make a F4.

Sorry. 1986 was one of the greatest tournament coaching jobs of all time. 11 seed. Basically playing with 7-8 guys. Beat the 1, 2, and 3 seeds. He does not belong on the list.
If 1986 doesn't happen, he gets strong consideration for the list.

I still love Bibby Knights line when Indiana was behind against LSU when he looked down the floor and saw Dale he knew his team was fine.

Recruited and developed a bunch of good players over a ten year stretch and made 5 final 4's- clearly a shite coach. You can't be serious

Too see how good he was all you have to do is look at the state of UofH bball before he arrived and after he left.

LSU was a 10 seed, Indiana was a loaded 1 seed. LSU was winning until Knight did his shtick and bullied the refs throwing a phone, etc. The refs bent over and spread their cheeks.

Dale Brown took 5 teams to the Sweet Sixteen and beyond.
All 5 times, he lost to the eventual national champion.
Twice to Bobby Knight Indiana teams
Twice to Denny Crum Louisville teams
The 5th time was to Magic Johnson's Michigan State team

Other coaches who had one Final Four appearance but I didn't consider. I wonder if anyone has opinions on them:
Rick Majerus (good coach, built up 3 programs, almost won NC)
Rollie Massimino (won NC)
Jim Valvano (won NC)
Lou Carnasecca (NYC legend)
Billy Tubbs (had multiple successful teams)
PJ Carlesimo (took Michigan to OT in championship)
Shaka Smart (too soon)

Knight didn't throw anything he hit a phone arguing a call.
Legend and reality mix.
As Bob Knight said "I knew we were going to win when I saw Dale Brown was coaching them."

He didn't go 0-5 as he won games in Final Four.
His teams weren't the best except for 1 time. He blew that game by letting Drexler back in though.
Lewis is same level as Tark maybe little better.

quote:I like old school coaches and whatnot but as time goes by I see knight less as a hardass and more as an a-hole. Being a great coach doesn't give you a pass for being a shitty person. I don't know Coach Knight personally but the more I hear about him the more he just seems like a bully. Random thought back to discussion.
As Bob Knight said "I knew we were going to win when I saw Dale Brown was coaching them."

He was always good to us everytime he was around.
His players loved him. You've heard nobody that played 2 plus years for him say anything bad. He does things such as educational and charity work nobody knows about and he wants it that way.
He DGAF what you think of him as an outsider and he's going to do what he thinks is right no matter the repercussions.

He never said that.
You should try to learn instead of regurgitating.

I paraphrased but here's the exact quote
quote:
"I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance."

Yeah it's very close to what you said.
Bunch of people overrating Dale's coaching acumen in this thread.
