For those of you with NHL network and enjoy hockey it’s a great (commercial free I believe!) tournament going on from now through a few days through the near year.

Annual deal after Christmas where the best 15-20 year olds (effectively the NHLs developmental age) compete in an international competition.

The USA is generally much more competitive here relative to its senior national team. Even winning last year’s tournament.

Anyway if yall like hockey and need something to throw on the TV, my brother and I watch every year and enjoy it.

That 1994 team was so stacked.

Gunner Stahl being coached by The Dentist was the youth hockey version of Johnny Lawrence and Sensei Kreese. But illegal shenanigans by the other team not being called by the refs in the championship game is a hard hill for anyone to climb.

USA has won the last two World Juniors and us going for a three-peat.

It's kind of a big deal in the international hockey world. Winning World Juniors is the next step down from the Olympics.

I enjoy watching hockey but due being in Louisiana my whole life I’m not really familiar with the culture. What has put the U.S. ahead of other countries where it’s the premier sport? We’ve got family friends who have a son that goes to Dallas for club play several weekends a year and also plays on junior team that the local semi pro sponsors. I’m assuming stuff like that has some to do with it but the same thing is happening with soccer and the US is still kind of floundering in that on the world stage.

senior national team.

we have one of the best Teams in any of the age groups, and genders. you just start following hockey?

team usa is an alpha dog in hockey, our problem is we choke a lot, especially the females.

In female, there is team usa and team canada, rest are fodder

in men, any age group, even the paralympic teams, team usa is an alpha program, and usually gets in its own way.

The next step down from the Olympics is men's worlds. The US won in 2025 for the first time in 92 years.

The Worlds is huge in Europe. North America doesn’t care as much and because it occurs literally during the first round or two of the Stanley Cup playoffs, players on teams still alive for the Cup can’t participate, and even some players on teams eliminated choose not to after a grueling season. Not at all trying to say it’s not intense competition, because it most certainly is, it’s just not usually/ever “best-on-best”.

The Juniors is true “best-on-best”, but obviously limited to U-20. The only senior true “best-on-best” international tournaments are the Olympics / 4 Nations (and it sounds like the World Cup of Hockey is coming back, so that too).
