I'm pretty worried about our chances, though if Nola is not recovered from injury, perhaps he gets jumped on early and MEX can get to 5 runs. I don't know enough about what kind of pitching depth MEX has, but I betcha its going to be a bunch of crafty soft tossers and not sure how yougish Italy line up will cope.

I grinded on the math last night and came to same conclusions posted here in case of MEX win they have to score at least 5 or give up at least 6 if it is a 9 inning game. My brain hurt too bad to start figuring scenarios for extras, but USA chances begin to rapidly dwindle if one of the above scenarios aren't met heading into the extra frames, and even then, the longer the game goes the worse our chances get with any MEX wins.

It is a shame how it played out, and I'm not sure I can even argue with DeRossa's pitching management. Keller totally executed the pitch to get team USA out of the 6th, but that error ended up being the ultimate decider. Bitter fricking disappointment, but that's baseball for sure.

Can you see this...bottom 8th, Mex has a man on 3b and 2 outs leading 4-0. Line drive to the gap. Runner is held at 3b.

I can. Maybe don't start the guy that has 8 appearances in the big leagues in his entire career.

I can see Mexico frickery, but I don't think Italy is just going to handshake an outcome.

How is it even remotely possible for DeRosa to not know we hadn't clinched a quarterfinal berth. I can't wrap my head around that.

And this is the guy slated to start the championship if they made it. How you gonna line up a rookie to pitch that game? The US sold it as they were finally taking this seriously but clearly they don’t.

Honest question, should it be this complicated to calculate who advances to the next round or is that just the nature of a round robin baseball tournament with this many participants?

Seems overly complex.

This is pretty standard. Other sports use score differentials and tie breakers in pool play.

So I can't really argue with you on that, what I meant was in-game. The kid did look filthy that first inning, and then didn't really do anything after that to warrant a short leash. Same with the other guys. Seem like really the long ball has been an issue with the staff as a whole.

The only time we have won we had Jim Leyland as manager. There is a drastic difference between Jim Leyland and this assclown who doesn't even know the rules. I hope DeRosa is getting destroyed for this!

Aaron Judge is consistent, I'll give him that. He even chokes in games, not wearing a NYY uniform.

Did some quick calculations on when the run would need to be scored for U.S. to advance if Mexico wins in extra innings. As has been established, if the game doesn’t go to extras and Mexico wins, U.S. advances if Mexico scores at least 5.

U.S. is out if Mexico wins and scores 4 or fewer, or scores exactly 5 but wins in extras (the lone exception being if Mexico walk it off with no outs in the bottom of the 10th, which would advance it to the next tiebreaker).

If Mexico wins with 6 runs, the game would have to end with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th or earlier for the U.S. to advance. If they win with 7 runs, they’d have to win with 0 outs in the bottom of the 13th or earlier. If they win with 8 runs, they’d have to win in the 14th inning or earlier.
