I’d be curious to know what current productive starting players think about unproven players that have yet to play a collegiate down that will be earning more money than them. You would have to think this would make a lot of current players angry. Not all these kids that are commanding these big NIL deals are going to ever see the field because we’ve had more than a few 5 stars recruits that just didn’t get any better than they were in high school.

Teams must be bloated with inner dissension and greed right now.

I truly don’t see how it can’t cause dissension and jealousy. I’d be very upset if my boss hired some unproven person and paid them more than me because I’ve been working in my profession for 30 years. I’ve forgotten more than most of these young people know that I help train.

This is probably why they have a cut off limit for guys like Phillips. Yes, we could have spent the extra $200k to keep him but then we have to give raises to how many on the current roster to not piss them off? Was it really just about $200k for Phillips, or about the $800k+ once you factor in all the other raises you’ll have to give to experienced guys on the team?

Campbell was our highest paid guy this year at $500k. With what we are paying this incoming class, what are we paying guys like Nuss, Weeks, McKinnley, Reliford, Stamps, woodland, Keys, Anderson and etc to stay??? If Kelly has already got guys like Jones, Taylor, Anderson and etc agreeing to stay for X amount of dollars, then you don’t want to rock that boat on an unproven high school kid. Cut your losses and go to the portal.

This is probably why we have and will have more guys hitting the portal. We probably told them this is what we are paying you, take it or leave it. It’s time to thin the roster or dead weight so we can free up money. You basically have to look at the roster as 2 rosters. One roster is the highly paid guys that you need and expect results from. The other roster is developmental guys that you can afford to lose if they get greedy. They can work their way in to a higher pay day but they have to earn it like a job. Production = Pay. A thinning of the roster “NIL” will have to happen every year.

No doubt it's already happening. NIL will jump the shark, and I think very soon. I'd guess withing the next 3 years NCAA will implement a salary cap, and then within another 5 years after they will have to adopt a system similar to the NFL where they have a cap on in-coming freshmen akin to rookies in the NFL, that way they can reserve more funds for the upperclassmen.

Move down to division III and your NIL problems are over. The players won’t be studs but at least they just want to play w/o getting paid.

Not without collective bargaining.

It’s going to blow up at some point. With the explosion of sports gambling you have a recipe for disaster. You will have jealous, lower paid players fixing games to cash in.

Just think how annoyed Ryan Perrilloux must be with the whole situation. He would have been rich. For awhile at least.
