re: Woj: Silver Exploring "Nuclear" Option on Sterling

Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks and an investor on Shark Tank, waited a few days before speaking out about Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling’s racist comments. When he did finally start talking about it, he had a lot to say.
#1 – On his views of Sterling’s comments:
“What Donald said was wrong. It was abhorrent. There’s no place for racism in the NBA, any business I’m associated with, and I don’t want to be associated with people who have that position.”
#2 – On whether/how the NBA should respond:
“I think you’ve got to be very, very careful when you start making blanket statements about what people say and think, as opposed to what they do. It’s a very, very slippery slope.”
#3 – On suggestions that the NBA should ban Sterling from the league:
“If it’s about racism and we’re ready to kick people out of the league, OK? Then what about homophobia? What about somebody who doesn’t like a particular religion? What about somebody who’s anti-Semitic? What about a xenophobe?”
#4 – On what it all boils down to:
“In this country, people are allowed to be morons.”

Michael Smith even pulled the "if the comments were made about homosexuals, no players would be thinking about protesting or boycotting". and that's the "slippey slope" argument i was discussing earlier

Cliffs in case anybody is interested:
-Said they had all the racist evidence they needed going back 22 years (the magette shower stuff, etc), but the judge limited them to 2 years prior to firing, of which they did not have much. They decided to drop the racist claims pre-trial. Also dropped claims against NBA on the novel claim that Sterling was an employee of the NBA because they had control over the franchise.
- Extremely contentious depositions. Sterling threw a piece of gum at the attorney during one.
- Went forward on age discrimination only.

Simmons just tweeted that he's expected that Sterling will get banned from the NBA for life and the team stripped. Players Association will demand the NBA resell the team or release all Clippers players for free agency.

the NBAPA is an interesting angle in this. they will freak the frick out if 1/30 salary caps are toxic, but they don't really have control over that. if they have all the clips declared as FAs, then that will water down everyone else's money in FA

That is an interdasting angle.

I lost so much respect for this hack. He has no issue saying players should boycott, risking their checks, but he paid to be a season ticket holder of the Clippers WHEN HE KNEW WHAT STERLING WAS.
He's a slimeball, and I regret every following his website to ESPN.

i kind of want to ask for help researching his articles and his discussions about sterling/the clippers and writing an anti-BS piece after this. he's a huge hypocrite and he's lurking on being a borderline scum bag at this point

Guess ESPN doesn't drug test.

People are defending this guys right to represent an NBA team? I say the NBA is getting exactly what they deserve for not having addressed him earlier. Years of litigation will only further embarrass the league as I'm sure there will be people coming out of the woodwork to tell of his dickish behavior
The best resolution for all involved is for this guy to disappear otherwise it's going to be a complete farce for years to come

Sterling is expected to counter with allowing all white Clippers players to be released into FA.

It shouldn't be too hard, he used them as a punchline for the longest time, because the Clippers were such a mess. If I get some free time, I'll dig up his articles from when he first moved out to LA... that's when he started with the Clipper's season tickets.

He's been vocal about Sterling being a racist a-hole for a while, but money still speaks louder than words.
This whole episode shows 1) The power of video/recording versus other forms of media and 2) The power of social media outrage now compared to even just a few years ago.

From what I've heard via a couple interviews is they were hoping he would be dead by now.

1) "Everyone else" = about 25% of the 450 players in the league. And that number is overstating it because not everyone with a player option will opt out and not all RFAs will "test the market". Not an insignificant number, but still a minority of the active players.
2) With the cap increase there is $150 million more in the system this year vs. last year, and even before that it looked like there was more cap space than worthy talent available this FA class.
3) The 1st tier guys weren't moving anyway, so all the Clippers roster hitting the market would mean is 2nd and 3rd tier guys get fairly paid rather than over paid because there are no big fish.
4) CP3 is president of the players association. He helped get rules preferential to his own personal situation put into the last CBA (2 year delay on tax team penalties in S&T), maybe he can do it again.
I don't think it'd be that hard of a sell to the players, especially on such an emotional issue.

Exactly. He KNEW Sterling was a racist a-hole, but still paid him money and supported the franchise. Now he's flipping his lid, screaming for Sterling to be gone WHEN HE SUPPORTED THE FRANCHISE KNOWING THIS WAS WHO STERLING WAS.
