Boston Celtics center Al Horford will not exercise the $30.1M option on his 2019-20 contract and become an unrestricted free agent, league sources tell ESPN. Horford and the Celtics both have interest in working toward a new deal in July, sources tell ESPN.

To sign a 3 or so year deal for a lot more guaranteed money. Almost certainly with Boston.

This.

The only thing Woj is really reporting is Horford is officially opting out. It's been rumored for weeks he would to sign a three-year deal

He has a spot in Dallas if Kemba heads further west or stays in Charlotte

Yup. Long term deal for more guaranteed. This is his last relatively major contract one would think.

What is he expected to sign? 3/45?
If that's the case, would it really be difficult for him to opt in and sign a 2/20 next year?

I could see 3/60, who knows?

Also, maybe he wants to go somewhere else? Clippers with Kawhi? Just throwing out ideas.

It think would be a huge risk with not a ton of upside. If he likes Boston might as well lock it in now

I thought for sure he would pick it up, but was told by a Boston guy in January that this supposedly has been the plan for a long time. It’s about financial security as well as giving the Cs a little cap flexibility going forward. I was curious if the Kyrie stuff changed anything, but I guess not.

Boston needs the flexibility now. So they could give a longer deal with the promise of being able to get better.

The AD and Kyrie sagas really put Boston in no mans land. They are still Better off than most the league

Will the 3 year deal not be there next year? He's been one of the most consistent players in the NBA over the past five seasons. Why not opt-in and then hit the open market next season? I bet he'll still get the same deal from the Celtics or another team.

He did see 2 max level players just get their 2020 season ruined in the NBA finals. Might be happy in Boston and just looking for long term security

Because the Knicks will offer him more

This is their big summer they’ve been talking about

End up with Al Horford and Julius Randall

He will be 34 next summer, with a down year or serious injury he could see his value crater

longer than that. Al's pretty much been the same steady player his whole career, only difference is Bud expanded his game out to the 3 point line.

come on home Al, we miss you.
