Answer. It’s the coaching staffs job to keep them motivated. It’s a failure by the staff and shouldn’t change the reflection of the quality of the loss after all games are played. The value of a win is reflected by the body of work of the team. If they have injuries and didn’t develop their depth that’s on them.

Thanks. I’ve always felt this way to an extent but thought that you have somewhat account for the early season atmosphere/size of game/etc. If a team is jacked as hell for a prime time matchup of at the time top teams, I just can’t quite see it the same as that team losing its third or fourth game to a likely inferior opponent. It’s easy to say the coaches should have them up, but I think we all know that isn’t often reality.

Cincinnati had some great narrow escape wins over Tulsa, ECU, and USF.

Shame all 3 teams ended up 4-8.

Perception of the win is adjusted as teams falter. In the case of the playoff committee they don't put any weight in ranked wins in the human polls the first few weeks that become average wins. That's what they should do.

Nobody cares LSU beat Texas.

Nobody cares Alabama and Clemson dominated Texas A&M.

Nobody cares USC and a bunch of other teams best Stanford.

I remember when Maryland beat the snot out of a ranked Syracuse team at the beginning of the year and thinking Maryland must be for real.

Georgia.

They were ranked 3rd when SC beat them, now they are all the way down to 4th.

Maryland scored 140 the first two weeks and everyone thought they would AT LEAST go to a bowl game.

im gonna use texas as an example because it's easy, it's not an attack on anyone (besides texas, really).

i am not giving lsu any additional credit for beating a texas team that we thought was good versus tcu, iowa state, or baylor for beating a texas team that we knew wasn't good. the ONLY thing that would do is give MORE credibility and value to preseason polls, which is the absolute last thing we should be doing.

Ranking at the time of the matchup has some merit, as it has some influence over that teams perceived worth and motivation. On the other hand, teams can get exposed and prove they weren’t worth their ranking.

What sucks for teams like LSU is you can go to Austin and beat a team like UT, which had a tough atmosphere, only to find out that nobody takes that win seriously later in the year, while other teams get away with playing nobody.

You need to look at Texas' year by year results. Other than 2001-2009 they've been the definition of a mediocre program. They've been worse than Michigan and that's not easy to do as a Blue Blood.

Going back to 1984, BYU over #3 Pitt in the season opener. The win propelled BYU to the national championship. Pitt finished 3-7-1 that season.

Can we instead look at a relevant time frame for them such as, I don't know, last year maybe where they won 10 games and beat UGA in the Sugar Bowl?

Well you can thank Georgia for all the Texas hype to start this season.

You can but that would be silly and you'd be looking at an outlier.

Other than 2001-2009 they are a five loss team since 1980. That's not a trend. It is what they are.

Except for when they aren't... like all the way back one year ago.

No they do not. However, in the spirit of ooc scheduling, playing A&M (and South Carolina every year) isn't bad at all.
