They were a power in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? Can the right coach restore them?

No. There isn’t enough talent in the area to become a perennial power. They would have to get their hands pretty dirty in recruiting players nationally to get the necessary talent to move to Lincoln each year.

I'll never say never, but it would take an extremely talented recruiter. The championships are far enough away that no top tier recruits are going to really care.

Nebraska uniforms are my personal favorites behind LSU. Wouldn't mind seeing them more in the limelight.

I feel like there is no reason they can't take control of their division with the right coach and some good recruiting. But, Wisconsin and Iowa are almost always going to be consistent. And, Fleck has Minnesota on the rise. So, it won't be easy. I know people have said the move to the Big Ten really hurt them in recruiting as they don't have access to Texas now.

Depends what you mean as a comeback. They won’t compete for national titles but they can be on Wisconsin’s level.

They would have to get a coach on Saban/Urban Meyer level.

Nebraska was a power until two things were taken away from them.

1. The "preferred walk-on" loophole. Wealthy Nebraska alums would pay for everything for Nebraska walkon players that would otherwise have scholarships. Outlawed in 1996.

2. Partial qualifier and non-qualifier limitation. The Big 12 limited this to 2 per school in 1996.

Is there any surprise that Tom Osborne retired after 1997, when he saw the writing on the wall?

Even Saban and Urban have to coach where the recruits are, and that ain’t in Lincoln.

Always liked them as a kid. However, I think they have gone the way of the famous Lady Techsters Basketball program

No

Their best chance is that super teams that comes around every 5-6 years with a loaded upperclass and dual threat QB that can make noise

That’s basically their ceiling at this point

there's no reason why they can't be on the level of Wisconsin.

He might could compete for one at Utah now since they’re in PAC 12. They were one win away from CFP this year.

Sure, if they can sustain continuity. Nebraska has been firing coaches every few years since Tom Osborne. Scott Frost will be Nebraska’s best shot for stability, but even he sees quite a bit of attrition amongst players and has dismissed more than a couple for off-field issues.

Wisconsin, for the most part, has been a Top-15 program for more than a decade and has elevated itself into a Top-10 program over the last five years. They know their identity, dating back to Barry Alvarez, and don’t deviate from it. Nebraska doesn’t have an identity, which is an issue.

Ok. That's stupid.Wisky is a decent program that will never win a NC. Fact. Now Nebraska hss a recruiting problem. Nobody in today's game wants to go to the middle of nowhere to play football.

How is it stupid to say Wisconsin is a a top 10-15 program? I think that's pretty much a fact. top 10 =/= winning the national championship PJ

Wisconsin ranks No. 6 among Power 5 teams in wins over the last five years, No. 7 over the last decade, No. 6 over the last 15 years, etc. Think they’re more than a “decent” program.

OK. Wisconsin has been one game away from the CFP multiple years. All it takes is one year for the stars to align, which is all you can ask from a developmental program. Never claimed they’re a current contender, which they are not.

What recruiting problem is that? Nebraska has put together Top-25 classes each of the last four seasons, yet they’ve strung three-consecutive losing seasons. They don’t have an identity anymore, and a lot of it comes from no sort of continuity amongst the coaching staff.

Don’t think people realize how difficult it is for developmental programs to sustain success in today’s CFB landscape. If it was so easy, there would be several “Wisconsin” programs out there, including Nebraska. Instead, we sit here year-after-year and say there is “no reason why Nebraska can’t be Wisconsin.” Been waiting for this to happen for several years, but they keep fricking their hires. Scott Frost is the best chance for them to take that step to Wisconsin’s level, but a four- and five-win season isn’t a good start.
