Will Gonzaga flame out early in the NCAA tournament again this year?

I think Gonzaga is the most overrated program in the past 15 years, either them or Pittsburgh.

They had a nice 3 year run from 1999-2001, making the Sweet 16 three years in a row as a double digit seed.

But they have not made the Elite 8 since 1999.

They have only made the Sweet 16 twice since that 3 year run, in 2006 and in 2009. No Sweet 16 appearances in 6 years.

They went 29-3 in the regular season in 2002, were awarded a 6 seed and lost in the first round to Wyoming.

2nd round exit in 2003.

Able to nab a 2 seed in 2004, and lost in the 2nd round to Trent Johnson's Nevada team.

In 2005 they were a 3 seed, and again exited early to 6th seeded Bobby Knight & Texas Tech.

In 2006 they were a very hyped team. Needed a missed chip shot wide open layup at the buzzer to win the WCC tournament over 10-19 Loyola Marymount, then needed a furious rally to beat 14th seeded Xavier in the 1st round, and finally got back to the Sweet 16 by beating Indiana in Mike Davis's last game. Then they had one of the most epic meltdowns in NCAA tournament history in their Sweet 16 loss to UCLA. Probably Gus Johnson's best game on the call.

In 2007 they barely made the tournament and weren't competitive in a 1st round loss to Indiana.

They lost in the 1st round again in 2008 to Steph Curry and Davidson.

In 2009 the bracket unfolded nicely for them, beating 13th seeded Akron and 12th seeded Western Kentucky on a last second layup before getting slaughtered by North Carolina in the Sweet 16.

In 2010 they beat Florida State in the 1st round before getting destroyed by Syracuse in the 2nd round.

In 2011 they snuck into the tournament as an 11 seed, beat St. John's in the 1st round before losing big to BYU and Jimmer Fredette in the 2nd round.

In 2012 they destroyed West Virginia in the 1st round before Ohio State wiped them out in the 2nd round.

In 2013 they finally got that 1 seed, almost became the 1st 1 seed to lose in the first round when Southern-BR took them to the wire and then Wichita State took them out in the 2nd round.

Last year they beat Oklahoma State in the 1st round before Arizona dispatched them in blowout fashion in the 2nd round.

So, to recap, since 2001:

2 Sweet 16s(none since 2009)
8 2nd round losses(5 years in a row)
3 first round losses

When you think of the programs that HAVE made the Elite 8 since 2001, such as Kent State, George Mason, Davidson, VCU, and Butler; its a surprise that they haven't been able to do the same despite all the resources and recruiting.

Let's face it, Gonzaga isn't deserving of their "elite status" since they never back it up in March.

Mark Few would have been fired at other "elite" programs because of his postseason failures.

By changing some of those dramatic verbs, you could be making a case for them being one of the most consistent programs.

It would have been nice for LSU if they could have beaten UCLA in the sweet 16 in 2006 when they lost by 2, Gus Johnson went bananas, and Morrison cried.

They are the Atlanta Braves of college basketball, always getting in the postseason but never going anywhere

Tubby Smith was fired for less at Kentucky, he made the tourney every year and yet got fired

Mark Few has exited from the Round of 32 eight times in his 15 seasons at Gonzaga and the Round of 64 three times. So, in total, he hasn't made it out of the first weekend in 11 of 15 seasons.

This is the best team he has had, but I won't buy them making a deep run until I see it.

No he wasn't. He left. As far as Gonzaga goes, anyone can lose early in the tourney, but this Gonzaga team is pretty good. I have seen them play quite a bit due to Wiltjer transferring there. I like them a lot.

They will almost for sure flame out early due to their lack of athleticism on the interior.

Will probably lose to an 8/9

You could argue the 2003-2004 and 2005-2006 squads, but they weren't ranked nearly as highly in advanced statistics as this season's team.

Per KenPom, this is Few's best team. It's no coincidence that they only have one loss to show for it. Few has quite a bit of experience mixed with talented youth.

They're aren't as talented as teams he's had in the past.

Talent wins out in March more often than not.

They've had three teams better than this one.

that is extremely subjective. id say they are just as talented as ever. at least 6 guys who are all very good. their 7th man has been out since kenny gaines broke his jaw and i dunno his timetable to return. they shoot the lights out of it too. the team as a whole is 50/40/70, which is absurd.

i like this team. they will make the sweet 16 and then from there, anything can happen. if they lose we will have to listen to how they weren't legit, which is fricking dumb. i personally think this is the best gonzaga team ever, so im excited to see them play in march.

I like Gonzaga, but every year it's painfully obvious that their weak conference doesn't prepare them for March...
