If they’re not owning the recruiting scene in all of Virginia, Maryland and DC then they just need to do a better job recruiting.

Neither of those places are in bumfrick Appalachia. Both are at least proper cities.

State played at LA tech in 2017

If I am a kid in a metro area with my pick of DI offers, Blacksburg will always be a hard sell, even if I live in Virigina Beach.

The weirdest one I remember was Texas playing at Wyoming in 2009.

Miami played at App St and Toledo NC State played at Marshall last weekend and we have games scheduled at ECU and App St. I don't think it's as uncommon as people are assuming.
But that doesn’t mean it isn’t stupid. We’re not going to play at ULM for Monroe recruits or Tech for Shreveport recruits. They come to us because that’s where they want to be. Can visiting schools even have contact with recruits on someone else’s campus?
That’s why we don’t play Tulane. Us going there only sets us up for embarrassment. We’re not competing with Tulane for recruits.

Colorado at Toledo... Baylor at ULM once when they were good... Texas also played Tulane in the Dome once

I remember that game - it was a legacy from the Bear wanting to recruit more Louisiana athletes. As I recall USL played 3 games in Tuscaloosa for little compensation, then the 4th game was in Lafayette. USL doubled the price of tickets and split the take with BAMA.

Plus we play at rice regularly.
We have also played at UTEP and UCF (they actually gave us a game) as 2 for 1 deals.
The big difference between us and vatech is that even in our worse years we never lost one.

most of those P5s are not the bluebloods like Bama or Ohio St... Miami's a special case.
Plus IMO the AAC and MWC are a cut above the other G5 conferences
And Virginia Tech is a blueblood?

For one thing, Virginia Tech never played at James Madison, because JMU is an FCS program. That never happens, except last week when someone did because of Florence on short notice. VT just got upset by JMU at home.
I do not know how people keep saying otherwise.

Didn't read through this whole thread, but I'll try to help:
That was at Va Tech. They never played at JMU.
Hampton Roads is a very key recruiting base for them and they have a large alumni presence in the area. It's the most heavily populated region in the state. Norfolk/Va Beach area has a population of nearly 2 million people. Va Tech has stiff competition for recruiting there, as Penn State and Ohio State have also historically recruited the area well. Playing road games at ODU gives them a sales pitch that they'll let recruits play games close to home. Blacksburg is not a particularly short drive from Norfolk.

The same thing happened to Virginia tech when they were ranked number 13 in 2010, they went to play James Madison at JMU

Mizzou and Oklahoma State have both brought top 20 teams to Troy in the past and gotten beat. Nobody plays in Troy anymore

State will play ULL to open the season but were able to get that game moved to the Dome. No idea why they would want to host that game though. I can't imagine that will sell many tickets.

The former Baylor AD (before he had to resign) was heavily questioned about why Baylor was playing at schools in lesser conferences. He stated that it was to avoid the expense of having to pay schools to come play you and that this number had been going up over the years.
I would assume that for schools with smaller attendance this is a bigger deal ( ie that if you only sell 45k tickets then paying a school a couple hundred grand to play you it a big deal)

Those are a little strange but none of those are as weird as Texas at Wyoming. Colorado at Toledo: Colorado is not on the same level as Texas and Toledo is at least in a state with a lot of football talent. Baylor at ULM: Baylor isn't isn't even close to Texas's level and ULM is in the state next door, full of talent. Texas at Tulane: Same thing about ULM above with the football talent state, and probably a good chunk of UT alumni in NO, cool city, etc. Similar for Texas at UCF. Texas at Rice and UTEP: in-state.
The Wyoming one's just weird. There's no recruiting rationale. It's not close to Texas. Not many alumni in the area, I'm presuming. Not a particularly desirable destination. It's just odd. I'm not saying it wasn't cool or that I didn't get a kick out of it, but it's the weirdest OOC road game I can recall (which is also why I thought it was cool haha) and likely will remain that way until Alabama plays at UMass or New Mexico State or Idaho.
