Liked this guy a lot. Wish his teams could have been a little better.

how much hate did Christian Laettner get back in the day? Or what about Bobby Hurley?

It kind of seemed like the hating started with Laettner but I couldn't be sure. I was in grade school when he hit that buzzer beater vs. Kentucky to send Duke to the Final Four. I always thought they were respected seeing how they had upset UNLV the year before

I don't really think that's really the case for a lot of guys. They may look unathletic because we are primed to assume that a black guy with muscles and tattoos is going to be fast and jump high, as opposed to someone who looks like Keaton Page.

It's why people on the MSB were calling the extremely unathletic, standstill shooter Rashard Lewis a great athlete a few years ago when the Magic were in the title hunt.

To explain why they hate white basketball players, fans say "he's unathletic, he's arrogant, he disagrees with referees (as if other guys are giving him handshakes and high-fives), he's dirty, he's overrated". But these are largely unquantifiable things that sound good and get people off the hook.

I think it's just a lot more socially acceptable, especially in circles with college students and college graduates (i.e. fewer rednecks).

With all that being said, Hansbrough did have a very unique playing style. He essentially initiated contact more than anyone but mid-2000s Dwayne Wade.

Well Laettner was an arrogant prick who liked to step on players and act like a bitch. I have no idea why anyone would hate Hurley.

Duke was well-liked as underdogs/upstarts in the 80s. When they became a powerhouse in the early 90s, they got a lot of hate, especially Laettner, who was like Henderson, insofar as how he reacted to a crowd fricking hating him.

He was a guy who loved being the villain, unlike Redick and Paulus. Fwiw, I think Rivers was like Laettner in that he fed off the hate, but since he only stayed for one year, it didn't become a national thing.

Good explanation. Guys like Aaron Craft are said to make their living of playing fundamentally sound and good defense (A prototypical compliment towards white Bballers). While that's true, he is also one of, if not the most athletic guy on the court. He just doesn't throw down tomahawk dunks and play flashy.

Also, I'm white. So I can hate on guys like Hansborough, Scheyer, Singler, etc. all I want.

Jon Scheyer is one of the few example I have seen of haters changing their opinions. By the time Duke got to the Final Four it was undeniable that he was a really good player . He had come up big time and time again for Duke, everybody had to shut up. It probable helped that Scheyer was never even mentioned as a possible NBA player so no one could bring that up like that did with Hansborough.

Probably because they believe those white guys get attention because they are white. Seriously. Some people think that way.

I do think you're right that there are a higher percentage of unathletic white guys than unathletic black guys. You have the spot-up shooters like Dupay, Chris Collins, whatever start shooting guard for a mid-major Cinderella, etc who aren't exactly athletic.

But guys like Craft, Balbay (not really white and not hated by anyone), Pangos, Singler, Vasquez (not really white and definitely hated), and Hinrich are fine athletes. No Russell Westbrook types, but very good athletes.

All of the Plumlees are also very athletic but only if they are doing activities that don't involve much basketball ability

White guys on upstarts are way less hated than white guys on top teams, unless they are just undeniably-annoying like Henderson.

No one hated Bryce Drew, Ali Farokhmenesch, Gordon Hayward, etc. I am still waiting for the day Butler makes the switch, and people start chants about fricking Kellen Dunham's mom. I bet it will happen in the next 3 years.
