re: Why is NASCAR the biggest motorsport in the US?

I have been to an F1 race and found it incredibly boring. The cars are running by and you can have a conversation without yelling because the cars are so quiet. Most of the race had to be watched on a big screen in front of our are because the track was so spread out.
Tickets were ridiculous. I paid around $500.00 US for a ticket for one race in a moderate zone. The seats in front of the pits were twice that price. Compared to $600 for my Season tickets at Texas which are at the Start/Finish line.

Aero is killing F1. The cars are too reliant on downforce and so if you're behind another car, you destroy your tires trying to get around him. To fix that they brought in DRS, which allows a driver to open up his rear wing on certain locations on the track if he is within a second of a car in front of him. So they fixed one problem by adding another one.
I can certainly see how spectators would be bored to death by that. However, I've been to a NASCAR race and I also found that pretty boring.

MotoGP is very exciting because there is a lot of overtaking back and forth. In F1, not so much.
It's easily the most exciting racing in the world.

For the same reason people watch Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Honey Boo Boo, Trailer Park Boys and Cops.
We're all just living in a White Trash World.

I tend to agree although I really like rally racing too. With bikes, they're so narrow as compared to the track that there are many viable lines through most corners so you see riders exploring alternate lines. That creates a lot of opportunities for passing. Whereas many F1 races are follow-the-leader (I'm looking at you Monaco). There is drama to be had in F1 but it's not at the front of the field. It's between Red Bull & Ferrari or McLaren & Force India. The drama is in the middle of the pack, not up front except when Rosberg & Hamilton take each other out.

I can totally respect that. It's not for everyone. Nor is baseball.

This is the big problem. People actually going to the races now, in the current era with the current engines, are severely underwhelmed. I went in 2013 when it was still V8s, and it was the most exciting and intense sporting event I've ever been to. I was hooked before but I'm DEFINITELY hooked now. I can deal with it being a little boring because I've seen it up close and personal when it was incredible. As for someone who starts now? Not so much.

I used to watch Indy 500 as a kid but as with NASCAR oval racing goes away as you mature...I watched the doc on Senna.
Now that's racing...and could be popular in the US if ESPN jumped on that wagon like they did the EPL.

ESPN used to have F1 in the 80's early 90's. Just was too costly to keep it. The FIA is greedy and elitist.

Hey now, Elliott Sadler won races and qualified for the chase in the 38 before Yates fell apart.

For all the downvotes, not one person has said why the sport is more entertaining than MotoGP or Rally. Just that its more entertaining becauase of the personalities.
What am i missing?

Close racing and the "bumping is racing" is more entertaining than never really fighting for a pass

I'm American and I watch forty different types of motorsport, including NASCAR.
If they're racing, I'm watching.
If they're racing, I'm watching.

Nationwide series now for JR. Went from Yates to Evernham when they fell apart, then down to Nationwide. Really was snake bit with bad teams - was one of the better young guys in the early 2000s until Robert Yates pulled the plug.

Indeed.
I find baseball incredibly boring to watch on the tube (unless it's my team in a postseason game), but always have a blast at the park. For some reason, though, NASCAR races are just so much more exciting both on TV and in person for me.
Maybe it's the engine noise, idk.

FIA has jack-all to do with TV broadcast rights. That goes to FOM, which is greedy (elitism has nothing to do with supply/demand).
But back in the day, they were giving ESPN F1 rights in this country for virtually nothing to get an audience. NBC (and FOX before it) pay money but it's peanuts compared to our population.

Reed Sorenson is another one that never took off. Lots of promise and hype, but never materialized.

You are aware that NBC has the American rights to both the EPL and Formula One, no?

It's more competitive. You can win some races after falling back to the 20s or 30s. In Indycar, not so much. Race will settle down to where only a few drivers can win. In Nascar, almost anything can happen. Also different tracks. Short tracks, super speedway, cookie cutters Darlington, and road coarses
