NASCAR races are just so much more exciting both on TV and in person for me.

Why? It's just going around in circles.

All you had to do is watch the first 20 laps of Pocono to see the incredible amount of strategy going into every lap.

Logano was adjusting the track bar inside his car, but only for turn 3, then putting it back for the other 2. Yes 2.

Drivers turning the engines on and off during a caution very early in the race to possibly shave maybe a second off their next pit.

It's like any sport. Looks simple and possibly boring until you learn the intricacies.

I don't like baseball anymore, but I recognize the strategies and appeal to others.

Those who criticize NASCAR and soccer without really having a reference are the real simpletons.

NASCAR rose from regional to national popularity when management realized that the key for fans was having personalities to root for and against (like WWE). When drivers feud on track (bumping) and off track (throwing punches), NASCAR may pay lip service to cleaning things up, but the reality is those feuds are great for business.

NASCAR's rise coincided with the cultural importance of the Indy 500 disappearing almost instantly with the Indycar split of '96. I think Jeff Gordon's championships also helped because he was apparently loved and hated in equal measure. NASCAR must be super frustrated that Dale Earnhardt Jr. can't win a championship because he is the most popular driver. Tony Stewart was great for business too, and I'm sure they are sorry to see him go.

NASCAR fans are not race fans, they are NASCAR fans. True race fans are pretty rare, I think it's true even in countries where racing is relatively popular. True race fans understand, appreciate, and enjoy the subtleties and differences between F1, Indycar, Le Mans prototypes, GT3, rally, etc., and outside of seeing them at the track, it's very hard to find real race fans among the people you meet day-to-day.

I disagree that NASCAR fans are not race fans. The average fans I agree but the serious ones know and love racing. I'm like you though I love all forms of racing: sportscar, Indy, F1, etc etc. The only ones I haven't really gotten into yet is rally cross and off-road racing. I just can't get into motorcycle racing though.

I will say this though I think sportscar endurance racing is probably the best form of racing period. You have to make the machines last, make the drivers last, battle the night, dealing with weather, and also dealing with faster and slower cars all at the same time. Le Mans is probably the pinnacle of racing IMO.

I do think knowing the personalities is a big part of enjoying racing. It provides drama and sub-plot beyond the actual on-track stuff. It gives you somebody to pull for (or against). For example, the rivalry between Rossi and Lorenzo last year in MotoGP was about as exciting as motorsport ever gets.

I could agree with that.

F1 is more about who spends the most

Indycar screwed themselves on their tv deal, if not for that and better promotional efforts, it could really take off.

They've had some of the best racing of any series in the last two years, and had bumps in viewership the past 3 seasons. - Just this year, (excluding the Indy500's 100th anniversary and its crazy attendance #'s), they've had multiple attendance records broken and been over 100k @ all of the road courses (except Barber, @ 85,000, which was also a record)

They have Watkins Glenn coming up. That could be a pretty good show

I love endurance racing. Lately it's really the best form of automobile racing. It used to be that there wasn't much overtaking on track. Races were won or lost in the pits. But now the cars are much more reliable and there is good racing for the entire 6, 12 or 24 hours, as the case may be.

I agree with that. IndyCar has had some great battles this year. Pagenaud is straight dominating this year. Sucks to see Target leave Ganassi after two odd decades as a sponsor.

Rossi vs Biaggi was my favorite.

Biaggi flipping him off on the turn...

Just never really paid much attention to it to be honest. Don't know the schedule, the drivers, events, history, etc.

I think I even cried a little bit for Toyota at Le Mans this year.

I was pulling for Porsche but damn I didn't want it to go down that way. I was devastated for them. Even the Porsche guys went over to the Toyota garage to tell them they knew who the real winner was. As far as I know, Porsche kept the trophy though.

Le Mans was a gut wrencher this year, I kept getting that 'awkward' feeling everytime they would show the poor Toyota team there @ the end.

I can see why Target left though. NBC does such a shite job of promoting it, and ESPN having such a weird broadcast schedule of it, they really don't have much incentive to promote it to the best of their abilities.

To seriously try to answer the question. I think it is because people relate to the local dirt track and then see the car that closely resembles that car is the "Stock Car"

NASCAR has put out multiple levels of racing and series and NASCAR fans are brand loyalist. Which is proven by the marketing.

Indy Car took a severe hit when Penske did not qualify for the 500 one year and then the George/Penske split forming the IRL those further alienating some CART fans.

There is some bigotry, the easiest way to explain it, in American fans. They will cheer for American drivers, since the series with the most American drivers is NASCAR, therefor it is the biggest series. After the IRL CART split it seemed that IndyCar became more foreign dominated, just a perception.

I mainly like GT racing (glad my Scuderia Corsa boys won) but I was hoping Webber would get his victory this year. That was probably one the craziest last 5 minutes I've ever seen.

I wished they would have stopped showing the garage views they were rough.

I half expected one of the Japanese guys to commit seppuku right there in the garage.
