Why is it such a big deal to ‘go across the middle’ for a pass?

I assume it is due to the chance for a harder hit from a defender. Or is the route harder?

That's where a defender can lay the wood....then get ejected and suspended...

Because the clowns are to the left and the jokers to the right.

In this day and age of the NFL it's nothing.

In the old days that was a great way to get lit up.

Many safeties I never got to witness. Wish I could have seen Kenny Houston, Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, Jack Tatum.

But the headhunters back in the 00s...seemed every week there was a highlight with one of these guys absolutely destroying some poor slot receiver coming across the middle. John Lynch, Brian Dawkins, Troy Polamulu, Sean Taylor..

It's not anymore.

The phrase came from the 1970's and 80's when Jack Tatum or Ronnie Lott would take your head off.

Now it's just a penalty, helmet to helmet, targeting, ejection, whatever...

So it's just a normal tackle even if the receiver can't see the defender.
