Why is Archie Manning going down as a great quarterback?

He has this legacy (worshipped by ole miss people) as one of the greatest quarterbacks and I don't understand why.
Lets look at his college stats:
3 year career= 31 TD, 40 INT and 4753 yards.
Avg per year= 10.3 TD, 13.3 INT and 1583 yards
That sucks!
I can think of 100's of quarterbacks throughout history with better stats.

quote:good question - would the comparison be between he and other ole miss qb's or nfl qb's? Still worshipped in MS. for sure. But, he and Olivia ain't gonna leave NOLA for the sacred ground of MS.

It's truly mind blowing. He once had a season with 6 TDs and 16 INTs and followed it by throwing 7 TDs and 20 INTs the next season. I know it was a different game back then and his supporting cast was bad, but his numbers are absolutely terrible.

If Peyton Manning was never born, nobody talks about the Mannings today. I truly believe that.

He never really had great teams, plus his children keep his name relevant.

He's not, he isn't.
Southern hype plus son has carried that guy in the media.

There aren't enough Ole Miss fans to get him on the pedestal that he resides historically. Teams did not pass much and good receivers were rare. Archie was and is a special ball player. Played on awful teams.

Best college QB I ever saw and I've been a Tiger fan for more than 50 years.

you absolutely cannot compare passing stats from the 1960's to now. It was a completely different game

The game has evolved since he played.
Namath had less than stellar stats as well.
Pull the Heisman stats from pre 1980 for QB's. Most would not make all conference now. I think we have to recognize that short passing game has changed risk/reward. Completion % has gone up and interceptions (for the top guys) have gone down. Also, Alabama is known as a run first team now and threw 33 passes Saturday. In 1970, 25 passes was a lot of attempts. 200 yards passing in 1970 was a big day. Now 300 yards is routine.
Archie was a leader and was exciting to watch in his time.

No, but you can compare his passing stats to his peers at the time.

Then you must be fricking blind

Manning did stuff way ahead of his time. Ole Miss lost by 1 to Bama one year and the guy had something like 400 yards passing. Just unheard of back in those days.
Also, beat LSU by himself one year 26-23. He played QB like no one before him.

certainly not archie manning

and Tanner Lee will "go down" as the GOAT Newman QB

Because Roger staubach once said that if he had played with Dallas that manning would have been a winner, or something to that effect.
But, as a Saints fan since 77, I still think that he is grossly overrated.
