You kidding me? They're too big to join a conference, they are above and beyond that.
Kidding kind of, although they are egomaniacs. But ND gets to play an easy schedule every year and with the right coach they would be playing in a BCS bowl every single year. And they would get the full payout from being in a BCS bowl so... do the math.

because they are so much smarter and better than every other college and university in the country. They even let their players decide whether or not to go to a bowl game or not

They don't have to and it is more beneficial for them not being associated with a conference especially because they are officially part of the BCS schools.

Back when they were still relevant year in and year out they inked a huge contract with NBC.
Moneywise, it was more than they could make in any conference.
Since then the BCS drastically increased the bowl payouts and ESPN drastically increased the tv payouts.
Back with the first NBC contract, I think it was a sound decision. It was not a sound decision when NBC renewed the contract with a much weaker Notre Dame.
If the next coach fails to bring Dame back to prominence, I think they will look at moving to a conference. Also depends what NBC does when the tv contract comes up for renewal.

Why share your profits with a conference when you are making as much money as they make. ND gets watched if they are good by everyone. ND is watched when they are bad by everyone. Face it ND could be a 6 - 6 team for the next 20 years and people would still watch them.

Because they get to pick in choose every opponent every year.

They really have it made by not being in a conference. If they win 10 games a season with a schedule they completely control, then they're in a BCS bowl. They keep all of the money as opposed to splitting it with 10-12 teams. There really is no conference that they could logistically be in that would be beneficial to them.

I bet NBC would keep them. They don't have shite for sports anymore other than SNF

Big 10 would be a nice conference to join.

they dont want to revenue share. You think the Yankees would if they didnt have to?

They're in the big east.

The real question should be why aren't they forced to? NCAA preaches fairness and parity across teams yet they allow a team to clearly have an unfair advantage with their exclusive TV contract. NCAA is a joke.

nah, all their sports except football
ETA: men's hockey is in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and mens'/womens' fencing competes in the Midwest Fencing Conference

easier to get an at large bid when you never come out second or third.
Posted on 12/7/09 at 3:19 pm to Jrv2damac
because they think their better than every conference in the nation...and their only in the big east during the basketball season.

Simple. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
In a conference they have to share. Not in a conference they don't.
