re: Why does the Big 10 suck so bad at baseball?

I was talking about hockey. Lots of talent would love to go to school in a warm winter climate yet continue to play the game. I put up ASU as an example. Check their recruiting and what kind of players they're able to bring in.
Said nothing about wrestling.

Essentially saying an SEC team could start whooping a historic wrestling power like Iowa if they just started putting some attention on the sport.
They probably could…

are you saying baseball is a regional sport like every kid in america doesn’t play little league and almost every state in the Big 10 doesn’t have a Major League team?
Sure Big 10 area of the country has baseball … but are they elite? Look at Top draft selections. Sure do see lot of players from South, Texas, and California

You mean out of thousands of former MLB players you can find exceptions?!? No way
Also, Jeter didn’t play college

He was a Michigan commit… they have to battle the culture up north that not just that the SEC is better, but that the minor leagues are too… a lot of Southern dudes turn down big minor league money to go to college

Their hockey and wrestling is equivalent to our baseball. They consistently have a team in the frozen four and between Iowa Penn state, Minnesota etc have really good wrestling programs. It’s where they invest the other money. In the sec it’s on baseball.
The Big Ten didn’t sponsor hockey until like 2012

The point is that it takes major investment of resources (money, time, people) to become serious contenders at any of these sports. Why the frick would a great wrestler from Florida go wrestle for UF’s club team when Iowa or Penn State can train them to the best they can be. Same can be said for any other sport.

If the SEC is going to get into a sport, it’s not gonna be as damn club teams… we’ve already seen how they’ve taken over softball from the West Coast… their money could do the same with almost any sport there is

The University of Florida literally has a club hockey team….

Probably been mentioned already but Wisconsin doesn't even have a team. Only B1G school that can claim that. fricking embarrassing.

Jeter was the #6 overall pick, he would have gone #1 but the Astros owner did not want to meet his price. A Southern HS kid drafted in the first round let alone top 10 is going pro barring some extraordinary circumstances

I disagree with the weather premise. It is the same reason why the college FB was always second to NFL in the Northeast and Midwest, because that is where the pro teams are located. Obviously, they have spread, but sports and fandom, above most things in modern society, are based on tradition. Even cities that have lost teams continue to support leagues.

I think this is a classic case of confusing correlation with causation. “Popularity” is not the issue. The SEC has become the dominant conference really in the last 15 years because schools have been putting more resources into baseball (and softball). In the past both sports were dominated by teams in the west, California and Arizona. Clearly the weather is a huge factor in being able to build and sustain those programs. College baseball season starts in February. Coincidentally all those MLB teams in the NE and MW are training in Florida and Arizona I’ll let you guess why.
