I was just reading the Spurs thread and it got me thinking. Why is it some people like to say, oh people only watch these teams bc Espn tells them to, I'm a real fan who appreciates a good team unlike people just looking for flash, blah blah blah. Who cares if someone likes a team that plays flashy and is on tv a lot? Why does that make them so "uncultured". How come you liking a team that doesn't get a ton of media attention make you "enlightened?

People generally dont like teams and players shoved down our throats. ESPN is especially bad about only showing about 6-8 teams play.

I don't disagree with that but Espn shows the teams they think people will watch, they aren't picking and choosing teams they want you to be a fan of, they are showing and talking about the teams that will get the best ratings

you like the team you like.... i have been a saints fan my entire life.. born in 88 first game in 92... i saw some of the bad times, but no where near the horrible times... but it does piss me off when people say, "you wernt here for the bad stuff, so your not a real fan"... to that i respond with, sorry i was born when i was born, but that doesnt change my love for the saints... same goes with lsu... been a fan my whole life... but i have not been alive long enough for the dark ages of lsu... sorry but that doesnt make me less of a fan.

If you live in Louisiana and are a Yankees or Lakers fan, you're a bitch. You're a front runner.

Just like I NEVER saw any Alabama stickers, hats, or shirts before 09. Now I see them daily. Front running bitches

See I don't agree with this, I'm an LSU and Braves fan, but I don't live in Atlanta, does that make me a bitch? Why is it bad to like a team that isn't where you live, why can't you be a Lakers and Yankee fan? I've got friends like this and they know everything about the teams they root for, an they watch them all the time, I would say they are better fans than most people who live in NY

Most in LA are Braves fans due to TBS and no local team to route for, not because of them winning titles. A lot of Cubs fans due to WGN. If I was from South LA, I'm pretty sure I'd be an Astros fan just due to proximity.

When I was growing up, there were basically two teams on TV every night. Cubs on WGN, and Braves on TBS. I became a Cubs fan at a very early age and missed out on 15 division titles and a WS title. Frick me.

Hardcore fans of teams like the Pirates, T'wolves, or Browns for example think they are better sportsfans than hardcore fans of a team like the Yankees or Lakers.

I agree somewhat. It's easier to be a fan of a team that wins.

Eta: this isn't even bringing the bandwagon into account. I'm just talking about the fans that live in their team's city.

DIFFERENT from liking NYY or LAL because the Braves were on tv every night and were the only MLB team in the south aside from Houston, and Houston isn't really the south or attractive to some Louisiana MLB fans.

If said person has family from there, or some other real connection to the place then I have no issues. But most of the time in the deep south when you have people that are fans of the Patriots, Red Sox, Lakers, etc, it's ONLY because those teams are good. Like a lot of my friends that are Duke fans and say "well I've always been a duke fan!" Yeah..you started following them in middle school simply because they were awesome and I guess you've just continued to do so. Picking a team to be a fan of simply because they're good is trash.

So? Why are they yankee fans in the first place? Unless you have an actual, legit connection to a team or school, I don't buy the excuse of being a fan of them just because "I always have".
