re: Why do some golfers “lose It” when they are still in their prime?

You don’t luck into winning 13 years in a row and spend 130 weeks at world number 1 without effort. DJ’s a lot smarter than he’d have everyone believe. There’s no doubt he went to LIV for the money and doesn’t work like he used to but he’s also 40 and didn’t make that a secret
Nobody gives a frick about you winning the Valspar Championship.
They care about what you did in majors.
I was as big of a Dustin Johnson fan as anyone, but he was the king of not finishing the majors.

Eh, seemed that way in majors but not really in general. He's still 3rd in active players PGA Tour wins with 24 only behind Tiger and Rory, 9 more than the next guy. You don't win 24 times on tour without some killer instinct.
People care about majors. He was talented enough to win as many majors as Phil.

Ricky Fowler

He didn’t win the valspar, he won a lot of WGC’s and playoff events, definitely not stacking up wins at the 3M or Rocket Mortgage. And he got screwed out of 2 majors, should have 4.

Jordan Spieth, Ricky Fowler, possibly now Max Homa
Spieth, and Fowler got married. Homa fell off after that. Homa’s game was good early in marriage, but fell off about a year after he had a child.
Hovland hasn’t fallen off. He finished third at the PGA Championship and was runner-up at the first FedExCup Playoffs event. He made it to the TOUR Championship and had a world ranking at No. 8.

Pretty sure Hovland shot an 84 this past weekend.
Insane because 2 years ago when he won the Fed Ex and tore up the Ryder Cup, I’m not even sure I’ve seen Scottie on that big of a heater. He was unconscious for a few weeks in 2023. Think he shot a 61 at the BMW and then destroyed everyone at the Fed Ex the next weekend.
Loved watching him when he’s on. Sucks seeing guys fall apart like that,

Yes, people care about the majors. But the players also care about the other events they play in and he won a lot of them for a long time. A choke artist/someone without a closer mentality never comes close to winning as many times as he did. Doesn't matter if you only care about majors.

Well, he’s coming off an injury in January, so I don’t know that it is fair to consider anything since January as him losing it.

I hope he bounces back but this isn't just an injury thing for him. He's kind of lost it after the 2023 off season when he changed his swing. Dude has two top 10 finishes since then in 17 Tour events. That bad after winning numerous events and the FedEx Cup, not a great sign.
Hell him and Homa have missed every cut this year in events that actually had a cut. The only tournaments they've placed in were no cut events.

Bump to say Hovland just won the Valspar bating Justin Thomas by one stroke.
Guess the signs were wrong.

Hovland was going through a swing change and changed his putter two weeks ago.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 5:57 pm to Tiger1242
Tom Watson won 8 majors by the age of 34 then got the yips and never won another. Golf is such a mental grind - I can't imagine. If it was easy we'd all do it.

He should have been one of the greats

Coming off an injury too, wasn’t he?

Huh?!
Lets get a list of major championship winners.
Won't have to go far before you bump into Tom Watson.
Nicklaus
Woods
Hagen
Hogan
Player.
That's it.
Should have been???

I mean one of the all time greats mentioned with Nicklaus and palmer.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 11:22 pm to Tiger1242
I think an added element is there was blood pressure on guys like Spieth, Fowler, JT, etc. to be the “next wave” and pick up the slack after Tiger fell off.
