There would have been a much easier pathway to success being the coach of a team in the terrible NFC South than being in the same division as Mahomes and an AFC that is loaded with top quarterbacks
Consistently going ~10-7 with what will remain an incomplete roster (until the can kicking stops) in a weak divison isn't that enticing. People do like new challenges and changes of scenery when things are stale

If he just upgraded to a middle of the road QB, he could have easily won a lot of games for 3-5 more years there.
So assume Payton is still coaching. Said QB would be Carr-level by cap necessity. Defense would remain average on paper but statistically inflated as a function of the NFC South (which is the worst-run division in the league right now by far). The Free Agency reinforcements that can be afforded will not be among the best at their positions. If things come together in a given year, they roll into the playoffs between 9-8 and 11-6 with a flawed roster and a Divisonal weekend ceiling. Then they pick in the 20s. Rinse and repeat

Can't blame him for wanting to break the cycle at all

He wasn’t part of the team selected to facilitate the transition at Gayle’s passing after being the main part of building the brand.

I would definitely like to know more about this aspect of the equation. I never thought of this angle, but, it makes sense.

Sean creating the "can kicking". I don't understand why people pretend this situation was forced upon him.

Derek Carr is being paid the same amount of money as Aaron Rodgers and more money than Kirk Cousins, Goff, and Geno Smith. They could have afforded almost any quarterback in the league.

Hard disagree with this statement. The Saints likely have (healthy) the best defensive backfield in the NFL with an very good LB room and an above average defensive line room.

With good play calling and above average quarterback play, the saints may have 2 losses right now.

This is the cycle he created.

The excuses made for Payton are insane.

because he filled the team with racists and then got mad when the racists refused to play for a white coach with a white QB

there, i said the truth that no one else wants to admit

If you were in his position would you want to live in New Orleans?

It was more of Payton’s decision for a lot of the bs they did that season. Also, Brees was retiring.

But yes, never miss an opportunity to shite on Brees. You people are pathetic.

QB situation.

plain and simple.

0 prospects in the horizon wanted to get out and go somewhere with a QB he could work with.

Payton was higher on Patrick Mahomes than either other team and let himself get talked out of it, because they still had Brees. Then Drew flamed out and left him with Winston. Of course he left.

Because Brees had been carrying him for years and he was about to be exposed as a fraud.
