There would have been a much easier pathway to success being the coach of a team in the terrible NFC South than being in the same division as Mahomes and an AFC that is loaded with top quarterbacks. And Payton went 9-8 in his last year with a Winston/Siemian/Hill combo. If he just upgraded to a middle of the road QB, he could have easily won a lot of games for 3-5 more years there.

He didn't want a rebuild and he allowed their cap to be screwed so hard...it'd be 5 more years for a hard reset.

I still think the extension he advocated and got for Hill right before he left was the most unethical thing I've ever seen in the NFL.

Who gives Hill $13MM a year 3 years ago

Edit. He got an extension in 2021. He's due $15.7MM in 2024 and 2025. You pretty much have to cut him this June. Save $10MM in cap if you do.

He tried quitting multiple times before, largely due to the terrible roster management he had a big hand in.

He’s just an a-hole

He manned the sidelines the last couple years of Brees' downward trend and likely saw the handwriting on the wall with having to find a new QB and rebuild the team around a new guy under center.

Personally, I think he was waiting for a call from Jerry Jones in Dallas to take over that job and it didn't come.

Because he was going to be exposed as a fraud without Brees

He’d never work for Jerry Jones. Payton demands total control that he wouldn’t have there.

His wife didn’t like the “crime” in New Orleans and wanted a more “vanilla” city. Allegedly

Still think the best job for him was to wait for the LA chargers job. They have all the toys offensively and an actual defense if he can get a good dc, underachieving and just needed to wait another year.

Do you remember Payton betting the house in the draft on the poet d-lineman for a SuperBowl? He knew the saints had zero respect amongst the league.

Why can't people understand that sometimes people are just ready for a change? Just like any other profession.

Sports are funny that people get so butthurt when players and coaches leave, but at the end of the day it's a job for them.

Maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall. Drew got old and there was no one to replace him. The rest of the roster is aging and the assets with which to replace them are limited.
