I realize that in older ballparks like Fenway and Wrigley they had to make do with a certain area. But why are they like this now? Are there really that many 360 ft. fly outs to centerfield?

ETA: Okay, this last sentence is getting more responses than the actual question. I was really trying to ask why it is acceptable for the RF and LF to be so close, but CF has to be about 100 ft farther at least.

ETA 2: And by symmetrical, I mean why isn't the fence the same distance all around?

I played baseball through middle school and all of our fields were symmetrical. I see on the little league world series that the fence is the same distance all the way around.

it's tradition but some are just ridiculous.

I was thinking about this after Pujols blooper over third base last week went for a ground rule double.

No. I'm just starting a thread to fill a void in my life.

Not directly related, but i just wanted to shout down the myth that Wrigley is a hitter's park.

The only time the hitters have an advantage is the dozen or less games per season that the wind blows out with any strength

Maybe. That fricker certainly doesn't need any help getting on base.

The better question would be "why should baseball fields be symmetrical?" Are all golf courses the same?

I'm just wondering why they aren't? Why can't/isn't the fence 400 ft across the entirety?

That isn't a very good analogy Zach because most sports do have symmetrical and identical playing fields.

So, the only reason I have so far is because of baseball tradition.

and this is about as far as you'll get

baseball tradition dominates a lot of the logical questions that dominate baseball, for better or worse

Football fields and basketball courts are symmetrical.

And the golf course analogy is bad because every individual golfer is still playing on the same course, or an even playing field.

Baseball just has these traditions and people blindly follow them(though i'm ok with different lengths for baseball fields). Just like when baseball players brawl, we dont even bat an eye. But if basketball players fight, it's top news for days and they're thugs, lol.
