Why are the Colorado Rockies so consistently bad?

Since 2020 they are 207 games under .500 at 331-538.
Over 100 losses per season since 2023. On pace to do it again this season, currently at 45-70.
Is their farm system that bad or just an unlucky stretch the past few seasons?

They’ve spent money, just allocated it poorly.

Sad to see. I know it’s been years but their first few seasons as en expansion team had record setting attendance. I think they consistently had over 4 million attendance for their first few seasons.

I know they gave Kris Bryant a 7-year $182 million contract in 2022 and he's played a grand total of 170 games in that time and they have two more years to go. He may never play another game.

Spotty drafting and development of first round picks. Of course, it's not always the first rounders that work out but going back to 2010, outside of Story, Gray, Freeland and Rodgers nobody else made an impact.
If Dollander, Holliday and Condon excel then maybe they finally have something. But that's a long stretch for many high picks that didn't do much.

It has been ownership. The Monforts don't GAF about the team and product on the field. They're more interested in the real estate around the field. They bought most of it and have been developing the acreage over the last several years and plan to do more.
They know people will continue to go to the games because Coors Field is a great ballpark, and the away teams draw more fans most series because Denver is a city full of transplants from elsewhere.
The Walton/Penner group that now owns the Broncos bought a 40% ownership in the Rockies back in April, so I suspect things will start to change related to the product on the field. They won't stand for half arse effort to put a competitive team on the field. Their new Mile High Stadium and entertainment district plans are badarse and they're fully invested into making the Broncos a championship caliber team.

I went to the Marlins series and was shocked how short the Rockies players are.

As others have said, but let me add a litany of reasons: they pay other teams to take their best players (Arenado), pitchers hate pitching there and they give their best away for free, they sign injury ridden players to absurd contracts (Kris Bryant), their farm system sucks, they draft horribly, and once again their ownership sucks.
But through it all for whatever reason we keep showing up to Coors cause it’s a fun atmosphere.

When you don’t have a salary cap, allocating resources becomes exponentially more important because you have to actually compete like a real business.
Sounds like the Rockies have trouble with that part.
Unless they don’t want to win at all, which several sports team ownership groups don’t. They want profits. You don’t have to win to make money in pro sports.
