Lee Roy Jordan was their middle LB from 1965 to 1981 or something. Alabama had no pro team so I’m sure he brought some fans.
Staubach was a great QB.
They sort of originated drafting athlete prototypes. Bob Hayes, Too Tall Jones, etc. the combed small colleges for playersike CliffHarris from Ouchita Baptist.
They were a fixture in the playoffs from 1966 or so until 1981 or so.
They had a run in the 1990s.
They have an iconic uniform and marketed very well with the original cheerleaders, etc.

From 1970- 1995 the Cowboys went to 14 NFC championship games, 8 Super Bowls, and won 5 Lombardi trophies all while being branded "America's Team".
They haven't done a damn thing for 30 years, but all that success before that tends to grow a tremendous fanbase.

This. It’s the most generic in the NFL

DFW is one of the largest metros, has a huge population area with north and west Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
Combine this with the mystique of their Super Bowl run and the Oilers leaving, and you have a massive fan base.

Dallas, NYY, and the LAL are a brand that's why. I can't stand them.

The Steelers had a nationwide black following
because of all the black stars they had.
Franco
Greene
Blount
Jefferson

Cowboys were the first to use computers in their draft process. They loved finding guys no one else were looking at, including guys who played other sports

IMO, it started with their clean-cut Coach (Tom Landry) and QB (Staubach) — especially in the Cold War, where patriotism was big in the 60’s & 70’s.
I can say growing up in La during the late 60’s and all through the 70’s there was nothing to root for in the Saints.
However, once Jerrrrrrrrrrr Jones bought the team, and f’d-up a great thing with Jimmy Johnson, many left or went underground - hoping for the day when Jones would die…

bandwagon
If you're still rooting for the Cowboys in the modern day, you are quite literally the furthest thing from a bandwagoner.
To answer the OP, Dallas was WAY better at marketing on a broad scale than everyone else for a long time.

Same shite with the Steelers but at least that one is more understandable.
You’re letting your Cowboys hatred shine through. Carolina is a young team compared to most of the NFL. The Cowboys have been excellent at branding long before Jerry, and for years you had 3-4 fanbases that were national and not just regional. I’d say the Cowboys, Steelers, Packers, and maybe 49ers (but they were a late-comer).
Throw in the fact that DFW is one of the biggest metro areas in the country in the second most populous state. Factor in that the Cowboys broadcast reaches to Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Louisiana. Add in that the Oilers leaving left Texas a one-team state for a while.
Staubach was the All-American boy. Bob Lilly was a Texan through and through. The highly touted rivalry with Pittsburgh made everyone a star…Dorsett, Hollywood Henderson, Randy White. Their scouting was cutting edge and allowed themselves to draft Hall Of Fame talent in the later rounds (Bob Hayes).
THEN you add in that their suckage was very brief before Jimmy and Jerry made them the team of the ‘90’s.
Sure, they suck now, but they have a very loyal following. Jerry Jones is still a marketing genius. The stadium, the iconic cheerleaders, the access allowed to players, the awesome training facility. That should be admired. You can’t accuse a Cowboys fan of hopping on a bandwagon these days.
Again, your dislike of Dallas is why you fail to understand why they have so many fans.

They have Hispanic last names or they’re white trash. No middle ground

Dallas was glitz and glam compared to the Steelers.

I agree but that still doesn’t cast cowboys fans in a good light

Because it's easy to be a frontrunner.

The Steelers nationwide fanbase has more to do with people moving out of Western PA to other parts of the country when the steel mills closed down.
That is a lot of it. Rust belt in general

Dallas hasn’t made a conference title game since 1995. How is a Cowboys fan these days a front runner?

They have the exact same explanation for why the Browns have such a huge fanbase.
The Browns have no where near the national fanbase the Steelers have, Yes, the region got crushed by the decline of the steel mills. And Houston got crushed at the same time (late 70's) by the crash of the oil and gas industry. Neither have the front running fanbase the Steelers have.

Still a lot of Cowboys fans in north Florida since they were always on TV before the Jags came into the league.
