Why all turf baseball fields?

Watching the ECU TTU game and it just looks weird. I get the grass part, but is dirt that hard to maintain?

The dirt is the hard part to maintain. Grass is easy.

It's cheaper in the long run to just say frick it and install all turf. If you're underfunded/understaffed having a full field and dirt to maintain can be a logistical nightmare.

I fricking despise it but I get it for schools that can get snow.

It's because it's in Lubbock. They get bad wind almost every day and dust storms. Much easier to maintain and not have dirt fly everywhere

Lubbock is pretty windy... maybe they don't want the dirt blowing everywhere.

Traditional field takes a lot of time and manpower to properly maintain. All turf doesn't look nearly as good, but I certainly understand why more schools are making the switch.

It was garbage before turf due to poor maintenance.
There was a huge drop between the infield and outfield for example due to built up dirt from sweeping the infield and it never being leveled correctly

That's what I meant. In their case turf was necessary because it was a shitty field and it's just easier to say frick it and make it all turf.

Dirt turf is the best part of turf. No bad hops, all balls play true. If you've never played on it, you're missing out. It's so much easier to play infield.

Down here, all turf is better for drainage... look how much quicker the ULL regional started after rain delays than the Box

It's not that it's better for drainage, you don't need a tarp for a turf field. Drainage was not an issue at all in Alex Box, it's the extra time it takes to take the tarp off and maintain whatever damage was done to the dirt.

Yeah when I played at ULL my sophomore year (playing Cf) between the drop off and the mound I could see the hitter from waist up. It was the worst I had ever seen

Most schools can't afford a grounds crew and it saves you from a ton of rain outs

That drop off at the Tigue, before they turfed the whole field, was pretty huge.

Their tarp was bad also. It was when I worked the Sunbelt tourney in 08.
The best thing about the drop off was easy to get tarp off the field.
It rained hard one first nights we had to remove couple planks out of wall to let water out.

No, grass is much harder and costlier. Been there done that.

In the case of the Cajuns, field maintenance was up to the players and coaches. Yet another benefit of turf is letting them focus on baseball itself
