Well, there’s a couple of ways of looking at it. One is black-and-white accomplishments (in which case Brady stands alone) and the other is the eye test. The OP also didn’t say just NFL.

If you had to pick a QB to be the starter for four years for your favorite college team and then fifteen for your favorite NFL team, who do you take?

Young has an asterisk next to his name because it took so long for him to become a franchise guy. I think he was a top 10 talent to play in the league but he has a weird resume that can't align with other guys on the list. He went to the USFL instead of the NFL. Then was a tackling dummy for some atrocious Tampa Bay teams. Then had to sit on the bench behind a legend in Joe Montana. Then he was handed the keys to a Ferrari.

In a vacuum, I would say he was one of the 10 best but it's hard to overlook 94 wins, 33,000 yards and 232 TDs on a list where the average numbers are double that.

Brady
Montana
Marino
Rodgers
Warner
Elway
Manning
Brees
Favre
Kelly

People overvalue Manning in my opinion.

In no particular order (except the first two are obvious):

Brady
Montana
Unitas
Marino
Staubach
Manning
Elway
Rodgers
Brees
Otto Graham

I’m willing to listen to arguments of Lynn Dawson, Bart Starr, Steve Young and/or Sammy Baugh being in there instead of someone like Brees and/or Rodgers but I think those 14 are the legit claims when you try to make a list across eras. And I think Rodgers should be on that list before Brees.

Not to take away from any of the top 5 mentioned, they are all great, but some consideration should be given to the older class of successful QB's that called their own plays and didn't have a coordinator sitting high above calling plays and holes in a defense to a QB wearing a headset.

Eta: And, at a time when hitting a QB without a lot special rules was allowed.

Joe Montana

I remember reading years ago that during one particular season that of the 300+ first and 10 plays Montana was under center for, he never ran the same play twice. His game was centered around the mental aspect and no so much the physical. He wasn’t really a weight room guy at all. Ultimately it was the injuries that kept him off the field for a significant portion of his career. When he was healthy though, he was incredible. Still my all time favorite football player

Young is a great QB. However, he’s 39th in passing yards, 32nd in passing TDs, and 45th in completions. If the category was most talented QB, it would include Vick and Cam and Steve Young. But Young’s short tenure on a Super Bowl ready team takes him out of my top 10.

People will question and disagree with why I have Montana #1. I saw a ton of Montana regular season games and all playoff games and all Super Bowls he played in. I have seen him knocked out of games as in injured or literally knocked out cold. But I have never, not a single time seen him lose his cool and get rattled. I have seen Brady get rattled numerous times. Also Joe Cool never lost a Super Bowl, Brady did.

These lists are hilarious.

Marino did not win championships because the Dolphins had no defense. When you lose 45-41 it is not the QBs fault.

Who was the first QB to win four Super Bowls (with two MVPs)? If Bradshaw is not on the list it is a bad list.

No one has mentioned Jim Kelly, but that Bill’s offense was the forerunner of the modern up tempo offense. He deserves consideration.

He led the league in completion % 5 times, TDs 4 times, TD% 3 times, YPA 5 times, and QB Rating 6 times. He won 2 MVPs and was a First Team All-Pro 3 times and 2nd team 4 more times. He did that all after the age of 30.

He sat behind Montana til he was 30. You don’t know much of shite about football huh? Just look at stats and rankings

He sat behind another top 10 all time QB who had already won the team SBs and was entrenched as the starter and you are somehow thinking that’s a mark against Young. Rodgers sat behind Favre, you going to hold that against him too? Brady only started because of an injury to Bledsoe.

In favor of young’s inclusion on a top 10 list, I’d argue that his 1994 season is the single greatest season for a qb outside of this current generation with the video game stats.

I know plenty about football. I know Young played for Tampa for two years and threw 11 TDs to 22 Int. He then sat behind Montana for a few years.

We don’t know what Young would have done on a different team or if he would have played more years. The unknown is why I can’t put him above guys who actually did it. You’re extrapolating data to prove your opinion. The other guys actually did it.

Young is right there in the conversation. He’s just on the outside looking in for me. Similar to Terrell Davis. Davis had a great, but short career. But for that reason I’m not going to put him above E. Smith or B. Sanders.
