I never understood his hire back in 05.

Corso talked about it. Daryll Gross wanted to make the athletic department the way he wanted it. He went for a west coast guy, an idiotic idea for snowbound Upstate New York. These areas couldn't possibly be more different.

One that everyone has suddenly softened on (because he’s a good commentator and seems like a genuinely nice guy) is Gene Chizik.

5-19 at Iowa State (even though they were decent before and after his tenure). Had a decent first season at Auburn at 8-5, then had a senior-loaded class in 2010 and Cam literally fell into his lap and won a NC. Next season they dip to 8-5, which seems decent enough until you see how badly they were destroyed in those games, and followed that up with a 3-9 season and lost every SEC game (with a team largely signed during his tenure).

5-19 to undefeated NC to winless in the SEC within 5 years.

Year after he’s fired, GusBus takes them to the BCSNCG

The guy at Bama before Bryant only won 4 games in 3 seasons with Bart Starr as his QB.

Curly Hallman

He took a program that had never had more than two consecutive losing seasons, and added four to the two Mike Archer had just had.

Didn't some dude who coached Northwestern in the 90s go like 9-55 or something?

Considering even Mike Archer, Jerry Stovall, and Gerry Dinardo all at least had one or two standout seasons at LSU, Curley looks really really bad.

15 wins in 4 years.

At LSU.

Going undefeated and winning a NC in an unparalleled era of SEC talent automatically removes you from the worst ever discussion. And that's saying nothing about fixing the problems he inherited when he took the job in 2009 or holding it together in 2011 when Auburn lost Cam, Fairley and 22 seniors - perhaps the biggest talent purge ever despite would LSU fans said this year.

Now if you want to argue worst coach to win a NC...sure toss his arse in the ring. Worst coach ever, no.

Idk, Curley’s last coaching job was at a high school in Muscle Shoals, AL. He was fired there too after losing seasons in his first four seasons as HC.

Curley is the only LSU football coach to never have a winning season, so he was easily the worst LSU coach and one of the worst ever in the SEC considering LSU's talent. But as mentioned already, Bama had some guy in the 50s that had an 0-10 season and won only 4 games in 3 years. Considering Bama is Bama, he has to be up there too.

Ventura and Locksley sound like good picks though for guys I'm familiar with.
